1983 Pharmacist/Pharmacy Census Responding to the 1983 National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) pharmacy/pharmacist census, state boards of pharmacy report a total of 164,349 pharmacist$ in the U.S. and a total of 61,266 pharmacies. State-by-state totals are shown in the chart below. According to NABP figures, the proportions of pharmacists working in particular areas are: • Community practice, 73 % (121,000); • Hospital pharmacies, 19% (32,100); • Manufacturing and wholesale, 1% (2,100); • Teachin-g or govf'rnment settings, 2% (4,000); • Other capacities, 3% (5,200).

"In-State" totals indicate those licensed pharmacists who reside in the state indicated . The "Total Licenses" figures are higher than the "In-State" figures due to the fact that many pharmacists are licensed in more than one state.
