This theme was selected to emphasize all aspects of underground space use in the civil engineering and mining sectors. Topics to be covered include: Site investigation and ground characterization; Design aspects; Construction aspects and performance monitoring; Planning and economics of projects; Tender methods and contracts; Historical reviews and rehabilitation; Trenchless technology. The meeting will be a broad-based examination of North American tunneling and underground space development, covering topics ranging from an examination of the market and public policy to technical innovation and predictions of future developments and projects. Session sub-themes are: 1. Urban Policy--when and where to go underground; 2. The North American Market--when and where will Canada, the U.S.A. and Mexico go underground?; 3. Contracting Practice-creating incentives to innovate and avoid disputes; 4. Technology--evolution or revolution? Present state of the art and beyond; and 5. Finance--innovative financing options.
