1996-97 Nominations Committee Report

The 1996-97 Nominations Committee respectfully submits the following slate of nominees for election to office by the membership of the Society for Adolescent Medicine during its Annual Business Meeting on Saturday, March 8, 1997, in San Francisco, California.

President-Elect: Martin M. Fisher, M.D., FSAM Martin Fisher, M.D., received his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University in 1972 and his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1975. He completed a residency in pediatrics in 1978 and a subsequent two-year fellowship in adolescent medicine at Long Island JewishHillside Medical Center in New Hyde Park, New York. In 1994, Dr. Fisher was certified as a Diplomate of the Subboard of Adolescent Medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Fisher joined the Division of Adolescent Medicine of North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York in 1980, becoming Associate Chief in 1986 and Chief of the Division in 1993. During his years at North Shore University Hospital, he attained the academic ranks of Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (1983-1989), Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics (1989-1993), and Associate Professor of Pediatrics (1993-1996) at the Cornell University Medical College in New York. In his clinical activities, Dr. Fisher has concentrated on providing adolescent health care in diverse settings as the Medical Director of a suburban adolescent health service, two school-based health centers, an office practice specializing in the treatment of eating disorders, an adolescent in-patient unit, and a group home serving high-risk youth. Dr. Fisher joined the Society for Adolescent Medicine in 1978. He has co-authored ten research studies presented at the Society's Annual Meetings, has served on several Ad-Hoc Committees (Grants Administration, Adolescent Health Screening Guide-

lines, Professional Development), and has been coordinator of the Society's Special Interest Group on Eating Disorders in Adolescence. A member of the Program Committee since 1987, Dr. Fisher served successive two-year terms as Resource Coordinator, Workshop Coordinator, Associate Director of Programs, Director of Programs, and Director of Continuing Medical Education. He also represented the Society on the 1993--1994 and 1996-1997 committees established in conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatrics to develop review courses for the Subspecialty Certifying Examinations in Adolescent Medicine. Dr. Fisher served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Adolescent Health from 1985-1992 and has co-authored two position papers for the Society. He has been on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics since 1987, serving as an Associate Editor from 1987-1992, and has been a reviewer for seven other journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Pediatrics, and the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Dr. Fisher has been co-editor of a multi-authored textbook (Comprehensive Adolescent Health Care), an issue of Adolescent Medicine: State of the Art Reviews ("Health Care in Schools"), and an issue of Pediatric Annuals ("Adolescent Sexuality"). He has authored or co-authored more than 30 original research articles, 25 research abstracts, and 25 chapters and reviews. His major areas of research and writing have involved suburban adolescent health care, school-based health care, adolescent sexuality, and eating disorders in adolescents. He has received grants for the development of his Division's suburban adolescent health service, school-based health centers, and HIV prevention programs. He has been a member of the Society for Pediatric Research since 1994. Dr. Fisher is the father of three adolescents: Adina, 18; Jessica, 14; and Robert, 11. He lives on Long

Examination course. Dr. Coupey is a frequently invited speaker on adolescent medicine topics at national pediatric CME meetings and has published numerous chapters and articles in textbooks and journals.

Coupey, M.D. Susan M. Coupey is Professor of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Associate Director of the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York. She was born in Montreal and completed most of her medical education in Canada, graduating from the University of British Columbia School of Medicine in 1975, and the Montreal Children's Hospital Pediatric Residency Training Program in 1978. After completing a one year Fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at Montefiore/Einstein in 1979, she accepted a faculty position and has remained with the institution throughout her academic career. She was promoted to full professor in 1993. In 1994, she was certified as a Diplomate of the Subboard of Adolescent Medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Coupey joined the Society for Adolescent Medicine in 1979. During her 17 years as a SAM member, she has served two terms on the Awards Committee, two terms on the Program Committee, one term on the Nominations Committee, and as Chairperson, for the past six years, of the Journal Advisory Committee. In addition, Dr. Coupey, along with her postdoctoral fellow trainees, has presented many abstracts and workshops over the years at various SAM Annual Meetings. Dr. Coupey currently serves as Associate Editor of three medical journals: Adolescent Medicine: State of

the Art Reviews; Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology; and the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. She recently completed a three year term on the Executive Committee of the Section on Adolescent Health of the American Academy of Pediatrics and currently serves as Secretary of the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, and on the Board of Trustees of the Children's Aid Society. Her first love is teaching and in addition to training pediatric residents and postdoctoral fellows in adolescent medicine, she is Director of the Introduction to Clinical Medicine Program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In this role, she is responsible for curriculum development and implementation of the first year Introduction to the Patient course as well as the second year Clinical

Fortenberry, M.D., M.S. Dr. Fortenberry received his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State U1~iversity in 1975, the M.D. Degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1979 and master's degree in Epidemiology in 1990. He completed an internal medicine residency at Oklahoma and at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Philadelphia. In 1994, he successfully completed the Adolescent Medicine Certifying Examination administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine. From 1983 to 1993, he was a member of the Adolescent Medicine Section in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma, and he became Section Chief in 1991. A physician-scientist grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (19891993) allowed him to receive extensive research experience in adolescent health and problem behavior under the mentorship of Richard Jessor at the Institute of Behavioral Science at Colorado University. In 1993, he joined the Adolescent Medicine Section in the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University. Current work centers around the Adolescent Health Training Project (funded by the Maternal Child Health Bureau) and research on the behavioral epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases. Dr. Fortenberry joined the Society for Adolescent Medicine in 1984. He has served on the Journal Advisory Committee and as president of the Midwest Regional Chapter of the Society. He co-chairs the STD and Research Interest Groups, and is a member of the Awards Committee.
