Bone Loss Affected by More than Estrogen Alone
R
esearchers have determined that estrogen levels may not be the only factor affecting bone loss in women who are menopausal, according to an Aug 1, 2006, news release from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich. Data from a study of 3,300 women over 10 years indicate that bone loss can begin even before a woman’s estrogen levels decline. Researchers found that an increase in levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a more predictive measure of bone loss. The levels of this hormone, which is produced by the pituitary gland and prompts sex hormone production, increase during the
perimenopausal years because the ovaries become less responsive to the hormone’s signal. Researchers believe that both estrogen and FSH may affect the resorption of minerals from bones to be used elsewhere in the body. The researchers recommend that women engage in regular weight-bearing activities to build and maintain bone mass. Estrogen Probably Not the Only Factor in Menopausal Bone Loss (news release, Ann Arbor, Mich: University of Michigan, Aug 1, 2006) http://www.umich.edu/news/index.html ?Releases/2006/Aug06/r080106 (accessed 9 Aug 2006).
Breast Cancer Risk May Be Linked to Cadmium Exposure
H
igh levels of cadmium in the body may be associated with increased risk of developing breast cancer, according to a June 20, 2006, news release from UW Health, Madison, Wis. People can be exposed to cadmium, a toxic metal that builds up in the body, through their work environment, the food they eat, or smoking. Researchers studied two groups of women with similar age distribution, including 246 women who had breast cancer and 254 women who did not. The participants were interviewed regarding 12 known risk factors for breast cancer, including reproductive history, height and weight, physical activity, and
smoking. Urine samples were taken from both groups to determine each participant’s level of cadmium exposure. After controlling for the risk factors, researchers found that women in the top 25% for cadmium levels had slightly more than twice the breast cancer risk than women in the lowest 25% for cadmium levels.
