Now Accepting Abstracts—January 6th Deadline The AATS Allied Health Poster Competition provides an opportunity for cardiothoracic allied health professionals to participate in a competition by presenting a scientific poster at the 2014 AATS Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada, April 27-30. The posters should reflect the participant’s research findings and/or new and innovative ideas for successful approaches in the management of the cardiothoracic patient. To be eligible for the program, cardiothoracic allied health professionals (NPs, PAs, Perfusionists, and RNs) must submit their abstract electronically on the AATS Web site at www.aats.com. Abstracts and posters may contain material that has been previously presented. Due to limited space, abstracts will be reviewed and selected by the AATS Allied Health Abstract Review Committee and successful applicants will be notified in late February 2014. 2014 AATS Summer Intern Scholarship Applications Now Available The AATS Summer Intern Scholarship program introduces the field of cardiothoracic surgery to first- and second-year medical students from North American medical institutions. By providing an opportunity to spend 8 weeks during the summer working in an AATS member’s cardiothoracic surgery department, the summer intern scholarship presents medical students with insight into the scientific investigation and study of cardiothoracic surgery. A grant of $2,500 is provided to successful applicants to underwrite their living expenses during the 8 weeks of guidance at the selected host institution. Operative Techniques in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery The Editor of Operative Techniques in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery would like to draw your attention to the upcoming Fall 2013 issue. The techniques described in this issue include the double switch procedure for ccTGA, Belsey-Mark IV repair, robotic repair of giant paraesophageal hernia, and mechanical circulatory support for the failing left ventricle. Each topic is described by expert surgeons in great technical detail, complete with outcomes of their technique and illustrations that outline each step of the procedure. Reside within or have completed a cardiothoracic residency training program within the geographic limits of the Association. Have been engaged in the practice of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery for at least three years following completion of postgraduate training. If a candidate completed his/her thoracic surgical residency in an institution within the geographic limits of the Association, such completion may count toward one of the three years of practice. Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in his or her respective state or province, and have a current appointment on the surgical staff of a hospital with no reportable action pending which could adversely affect such applicant’s staff privileges at any hospital.
