Retrograde tracer (1% solution of unconjugated cholera toxin subunit B, 0.2~1) was injected into the central nucleus of the amygdala from which we could obtained pressor response, tachycardia and the coordinated motor activities of vocalization both by electrical stimulation (lOO~A, O.Sms-pulse, 50Hz, 5s) and by microinjection of Lglutamate (20nM) in rats. Using immunohistochemical method (avidin-biotin conjugate with HRP), retrogradely labelled cells were found predominantly ipsilateral to the injection site in the following regions: insular cortex, dorsal endopiriform nucleus, perirhinal cortex, amygdala (bed n. of stria terminalis; cortical n.; medial n.; basal n.; accessory basal n.; lateral n.), thalamus (paraventricular n.; lateral geniculate n.; posterior intralaminar n.), hypothalamus (paraventricular n.; lateral hypothalamic area; ventromedial n.), central gray, dorsal raphe, ventral tegmental area, lateral parabrachial n., n. of solitary tract, and caudal raphe n.

In chicks chronical and subcutaneous implantation of testosterone induce crow-like vocdizution with characteristic trill structure acousticallyresemblingthe crow of maleadults. Recently we have showedthat implantationof a smallamount of testosteronedirectly into mesencephalon alsoinducedthe crow-like vocalization, and lesioningof dorso-medialareaof mesencephalon eliminateboth the distresscall andthe crow-like vocalization. In this study we proposedto localizethe area in respectto both the distresscall andthe crow-like vocalization. Electrical stimulationof medialareaof ICo (itercollicular nucleus)elicitedthe call which acousticallyresembles the distresscall in freely moving chicks. The elicitedcallingpatterns were varied dependingon pulsesandfrequency of stimuli. In testosteroneimplantedchicks electricalstimulationof the sameareaselicitedthe crow-like vocalization or the call resemblingdistresscall. Further we investigatedthe neural networks in medialareaof ICo usingneuroanatomicaltechniques.Tonic type neuronswith rhythmic activity were found from electrophysiologicalrecording in this area. Theseresultssuggestthat medialareaof ICo could have the vocal control system,andtestosteronemight act on the systemto transformdistresscall into crow-lie vocalization.
