Features of ejecting electrons from metals by slow molecular ions. (USSR) A comparative study of ion-electron emission has been performed. The (110) face of single crystal copper was used as a target. The target was cleaned by heating at 1000°C and by ion etching in argon. The cleanliness of target surface was checked by measurement of the threshold potential for secondary electron emission due to helium and argon ions. All measurements have been performed at target temperature 1000°C. It is found that the yield factor for all examined molecular ions H2 + , H3 + , He +, Nz +, 02 +, OH +, H20 +, CO +, CO2 + at energies below 1 to 1.6 keV is considerably lower than that for atomic ions (H +, He +, N +, O + , Ar+). The yield factor is also measured for doubly charged ions of argon and carbon monoxide. The causes for the low yield of ion-electron emission for slow molecular ions are discussed.
