1990 INTERNATIONAL GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING SYMPOSIUM’*’

Maryland, USA, 20-24 May 1990 The 1990 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS’90) will be held at the University of Maryland, College Park, USA from 20 to 24 May 1990. IGARSS’90 will be the tenth of its kind and will provide extensive concurrent fora for technical presentations on instrumentation, theory and experimentation. The theme of IGARSS’90, Remote Sensing Science for the Nineties, emphasizes the full suite of advanced sensors and information systems becoming available during the last decade of this century. Specially organized sessions are planned to focus on our ability to exploit multifrequency measurements of media using inversion strategies, to bring together theorists and experimentalists in the various energy regimes, and to examine techniques for extracting important parameters and specify variables for input into regional and global-scale process models. The technical sessions will be coordinated to provide a comprehensive and well-balanced programme of submitted and invited papers. Deadline for submission of,abstracts was 17 November 1989. Further information from IGARSS’90, Westover Consultants Inc., 6303 Ivy Lane, Suite 416, Greenbelt, Maryland 20770, USA. (Tel: 301-220 0685; Telefax: 301-345 2742.)

2.3. 23RD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF URSI’“’

Prague, Czechoslovakia,

28 August-5 September 1990

The organization of the scientific programme of the General Assembly as a whole is the responsibility of the Coordinator and the Associate Coordinator. Each URSI Commission will hold scientific symposia dealing with those topics within its scope that are of special current interest. In addition, as in the past, joint symposia will be organized by two or more Commissions on c2)From URSIInfomation Bulletin No. 250, September 1989. c3)Frorn URSI Information Bulletin No. 249, June 1989.

selected important topics of common interest. The programme will also include Tutorial Lectures, one in each of the Commissions, and three General Lectures of interest to the broad URSI community. A Symposium on the Interaction of Electromagnetic Fields with Biological Systems is being jointly organized by URSI and the Bioelectromagnetics Society (BEMS). 2.4. SYMPOSIUM ON GLOBAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING mANDIMDbr_T?:

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, 17-21 September 1990 This symposium is being organized by Commission VII of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), a non-government organization devoted to the development of international cooperation for the advancement of photogrammetry and remote sensing and their applications. It should be of interest to all scientists, technical specialists and resource managers with an interest in our environment. Special emphasis will be placed on photographic and remote sensing techniques which can be applied to global monitoring for impact analysis and to predict global changes to the years 2000 and 2050. The main topics of the symposium will be: Interpretation of photographic and remote sensing data Physical measurements and signatures in remote sensing Spatial information extraction and manipulation Renewable resources in rural areas Non-renewable resources Water and atmospheric remote sensing Human settlements Expert systems for remote sensing Global monitoring. Papers are invited on the techniques applicable to global monitoring and on the impacts of environmental changes on the world’s natural resources and the quality of human life. Abstracts may be in English or French, and the deadline for submission is 15 January 1990. Further information from: F. Hegyi, President ISPRS Commission VII, 1450 Government Street, Victoria, B.C., Canada V8W 3E7 (Telefax: 604-387 5999).
