Polish scientists working in the area of catalysis hold yearly Catalytic Colloquia in Cracow, the latest of which took place from 1st to 3rd February at the Jagielonian University (Faculty of Chemistry). Three plenary lectures were delivered during this meeting by Prof. A. Bielanski (Electron theory of catalysis - yesterday and today), Prof. J.Haber (Development tendencies in catalysis science), and Dr. TMachej (Catalysis in atmospheric protection). Twenty-four oral presentations (including the following titles: Quantitative XPS analysis of complex catalytic systems; Utilization of the X-ray powder diffractometry for the investigation of surface segregation in high dispersed bimetallic systems; The influence of MOO additions on the properties of nickel catalysts for steam reforming of hydrocarbons; fvlethane oxidation to formaldehyde; The influence of alkali metals additions toVOITi0 and MoO/TiO catalysts on their catalytic properties in the reaction of oxidative dehydrogenation of propane). For the first time in the history of the Annual Catalytic Colloquium, there was a poster session (at the end of the second day of the meeting). Thirty-nine posters were presented, these including the following titles: Surface of molybdena catalysts in the light of adsorption measurements; A TPD-method for the identification of active centres of solid catalysts; TPD investigations of the dehydroxylation process of an MgO surface; The Ru-Ni/AloOa system characterized by TPR, TPO and XRD methods; Controlled surface reaction in the preparation of Sn-Ni/AlpOs catalysts; Temperature treatment in the preparation applied catalysis A: General
of an active contact for ammonia synthesis; A model of the surface of an iron catalyst for ammonia synthesis; The preparation of K-C-Fe/Ab03 type catalysts for ammonia synthesis at low temperature. After the poster session, there was a meeting of the Polish Catalysis Club (PCC). The President of PCC, Prof. J. Haber (Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences, Cracow) reported on the First European Congress on Catalysis Europa&t-l (Montpellier, 12-17 September 1993) and then gave information related to EuropaCat(Maastricht, 69 September 1995). During this meeting, the strategy for catalysis development in Poland was also discussed. J. RYCZKOWSKl
1994 Gordon Research Conference on Catalysis
The 1994 Gordon Research Conference on Catalysis will be held at Colby Sawyer College (North) New London, New Hampshire, USA from June 29 to July 1. Gary B. McVicker will be in the Chair and Harold H. Kung will be Vice-Chairman. Cospeakers at the conference will be: Marye Anne Fox, “Mechanistic aspects of photocatalysis”; Sebastian C. Reyes, “Frequency response techniques for measuring kinetic processes within porous catalytic materials”; F.J. Feher, “Chemistry in solution vs. catalysis on surfaces: how do we bridge the gap?“; Ralph Dalla Betta, “Catalytic combustion of methane: a new approach to an old problem”; Henry C. Foley, “Carbogenic molecular sieves; structure and catalysis”; R.W. Diesen, “Catalysts development for a process to convert cruse butadiene to stryene”; Mark Volume 112 No. 1 - 12 May 1994
