Abstract A catalogue of almost all known Galactic Be stars in the 2MASS database (1185 in total) and in the MSX database (225 in total) is presented in this paper. From the color–color diagrams and spectral indexes, it is found that the IR excesses for many samples are due to free–free and free–bound emission from the ionized material around a Be star as suggested previously and that the mean spectral index derived for the samples is 1.50 ± 0.34 between J to K bands and 1.14 ± 0.42 between K to A bands, respectively. However, it is also found that there are eight Be stars that have large near infrared excess emission with spectral index values outside the range expected for free–free and free–bound emission. 1. Introduction q

Be stars have long been recognized to exhibit excess emission in the near IR (JHKL bands) (e.g., Johnson, 1967; Allen, 1973) as well as at longer wavelengths (e.g., Woolf et al., 1970; Gehrz et al., 1974; Cote´ and Waters, 1987). Two distinct mechanisms may contribute to the IR excesses: thermal radiation from circumstellar dust, and electron Bremsstrahlung originating in a shell of ionized gas (Allen, 1973).

By observing Be stars out to 10 lm, Woolf et al. (1970) suggested that the IR excess of Be stars may be due to free–free emission from the same ionized circumstellar material that gives rise to the Hydrogen Blamer emission line, a characteristic spectral feature of all Be stars. They could not rule out the possibility of the excess being due to thermal dust emission from their observations alone. Allen (1973) reached the same result from near IR observations of 248 early-type emission-line stars in HKL bands. Gehrz et al. (1974) studied 33 Be stars in the wavelength region 2–20 lm and found that the free–free emission from a hot circumstellar plasma shell is the most likely source of the excess IR radiation and that circumstellar dust could not produce the observed near IR energy distribution. In a statistic study of the IR excess of 101 Be stars listed in the Bright Star Catalogue (Hoffleit and Jaschek, 1982, hereafter BSC), based on the IR fluxes at 12, 25 and 60 lm obtained with the IRAS satellite, Cote´ and Waters (1987) concluded that the observed IR excesses in these Be stars are caused by free–free radiation from circumstellar material. This conclusion is in agreement with the result obtained by Gehrz et al. (1974) and Dachs and Wamsteker (1982). Moreover, Cote´ and Waters (1987) pointed out that three stars, 11 Cam, 120 Tau and HR 1847, behave every differently at all wavelengths, i.e., the excesses in 12 lm are normal for their spectral type, but their colors resemble those of stars surrounded by reflection nebulae. It is possible that the IRAS fluxes associated to these stars are mainly due to a reflection nebula close to or embedding the stars. Dougherty et al. (1991) studied the near IR observations of 101 Be stars listed in the BSC. They concluded that: on average the spectral index through the near- and far-IR (IRAS) wavelength regimes is constant. There is evidence that some Be stars have excesses emission with spectral index values outside the range expected for free–free and bound–free emission. This is attributed to either dust emission or the effect of absorption of photospheric emission by cool circumstellar material along the line of sight to the star. More recently, Dougherty et al. (1994) studied the near IR excesses of 144 Be stars listed in the BSC. They found that 31%, 41%, 51% and 62% of the sample
stars have significant excess emission at J, H, K and L bands, respectively. They also found that the near IR excess increases with wavelength, as expected for excess emission arising from free–free and free–bound processes and the largest color excess occurs for stars with early spectral types. They pointed out that the IR colors of 51 Oph, AX Mon, HR 2577 and HR 2545 were markedly different to the remainders in the sample. In the case of 51 Oph, the circumstellar emission is attributed to dust. The excess emissions from the other three stars are due to the presence of a late-type companion star. Our study for IRAS observations of 193 Be stars listed in the Catalogue of Be stars (Jaschek and Egret, 1995) has shown that not only free–free or free–bound radiation from the circumstellar ionized gas can be responsible for the large IR excesses of Be stars as suggested previously, but also, for some Be stars, thermal radiation from the circumstellar dust and/or nebula around the star can produce large IR excesses as well. It is also found that the far IR excesses of Be stars increases with wavelengths (Zhang et al., 2004). However, before the 2MASS observation, all near infrared observations of Be stars mentioned above have been restricted on the limited samples and this situation results in the lack of good systematic investigation of Be stars in the near infrared region. Thanks to the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) which covers 99.998% of the sky and the 2MASS Point Source Catalog (2MASS PSC) contains positions and photometry for 470,992,970 objects at the J (1.24 lm), H (1.66 lm) and Ks (2.16 lm, hereafter K) nearinfrared bands (2MASS Home Page, 2003). Thus from the 2MASS PSC it is possible to make the systematic investigation for Be stars in the near IR region. In this paper, based on the 2MASS PSC, MSX6C Infrared Point Source Catalog (Egan+ 2003, hereafter MSX) and the Catalogue of Be stars by Jaschek and Egret (1982, 1995), we have made the cross-identification between the Be star and the 2MASS source and the cross-identification between the 2MASS source and MSX source. The objective of these identifications is to generate a unique homogeneous set of data at JHK bands

from 2MASS and to obtain data at A band (8.28 lm) from MSX, from these data the processes responsible for the IR excess radiation in Be stars would be better studied.
2. Sample and data This study is restricted to the Be stars listed in the Catalogue of Be stars by Jaschek and Egret (1982, 1995, about 1300 in total). The main aim of this paper is to identify the 2MASS associations of these Be stars, to obtain the magnitudes at JHK bands for Be star with 2MASS association from 2MASS PSC and to discuss some physical properties and environment of Be stars according to their nature in the near infrared. First, based on the positions, magnitudes in V and spectral types from the Catalogue of Be stars, the positions of all Be stars in the Catalogue of Be stars are checked and corrected with the USNOB1.0 Catalog (Monet+ 2003, hereafter USNO) and/or the GSC 2.2 Catalogue (STScI, 2001, hereafter GSC). If necessary, the Simbad database is also used. In order to make the cross-identification between a Be star and a certain 2MASS source, the positional accuracies in both catalogues should be considered. As mentioned in the Explanatory Supplement to the 2MASS All Sky Data Release (2MASS Home Page, 2003, hereafter 2MASS ES), the positional uncertainty in the 2MASS PSC is not more than 700 for most sources, while the typical positional uncertainties in the USNO are of 0.200 (USNO). Thus based on the Be star position from USNO and/or GSC, the circle with the diameter of 700 is employed as the searching area to extract the related sources in the 2MASS PSC catalogue. If there is only a 2MASS source in this error circle, the cross-identification is almost positive. It should be pointed out that in some cases of more than one 2MASS sources in the error circle, the distance between the position of a star and the position of 2MASS sources as well as the visual magnitude from the Catalog of Be stars are considered as the references to extract the best one to be the 2MASS counterpart. If necessary, the Simbad database is also used in the identification.

In order to make this catalogue as accurate as possible, we have updated the photometry and spectroscopy of these stars using the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues (ESA, 1997, hereafter HTC) and the Simbad database. Based on this new photometry, we have ruled out that these are B[e] stars or non B-type stars. It is notable that there are few sample stars also appear in the Herbig Ae/Be members and candidate members listed by some authors (e.g., The´ et al., 1994; Vieira et al., 2003). Because it is very difficult to determine whether these stars are really Be stars or Herbig Be stars, we will study them as Be stars in this paper. Finally, a total of 1185 Be stars have the proper 2MASS counterparts, and these sources have the distances of less than 300 from the positions of Be stars. It is notable that there are six sources, No. 35, 493, 591, 857, 942 and 956, have the distances of more than 100 , according to the 2MASS ES, the positional separation between the 2MASS and optical association larger than 100 are either proper motion candidates, or possible cases of chance alignments with the IR sources. Moreover, based on the position in 2MASS PSC, we use a 500 searching circle to search the data at A band for the samples in the MSX. Finally, a total of 225 sources have their flux at A band. All identified 2MASS associations of the Be stars are listed in Table 1. The items in the columns of Table 1 are listed as follows: (1) Number in the Catalogue of Be stars (Jaschek and Egret, 1995); or identification in the Catalogue of Be stars (Jaschek and Egret, 1982), (2) Spectral type most from HTC and few from the Simbad database, Hubert et al. (1998) and the Catalogue of Be stars (Jaschek and Egret, 1995); (3) V magnitude most from HTC and few from the Simbad database; (4) observed color B–V most from HTC and few from the Simbad database; (5) The distance between the position of Be star and the position of the related 2MASS source in the arc-second; (6,7) The R.A. and Dec. from 2MASS PSC at the epoch of 2000, respectively; (8,9) J magnitude and its total magnitude uncertainty from 2MASS PSC; (10,11) H magnitude and its total magnitude uncertainty from 2MASS PSC; (12,13) K magnitude and its total magnitude uncertainty from 2MASS PSC; (14) The interstellar extinction at

3. Interstellar extinction correction In the near IR region, the reddening due to interstellar material along the line of sight to the star cannot be neglected in particular for stars, like most Be stars, close to the Galactic plane. There are a number of methods to estimate the interstellar extinction (e.g. Schild, 1978; Beeckmans and Hubert-Delplace, 1980; Cramer and Maeder, 1979; Cramer, 1982; Goraya, 1984; North and Nicolet, 1990; Howells et al., 2001). The most common method of determining the effects of interstellar reddening is estimation of the excess (B–V) color, E (B–V) from the intrinsic (B–V)0 color of the star (e.g. Waters et al., 1988; Chokshi and Cohen, 1987; Dougherty et al., 1991, 1994; Cote´ et al., 1996), i.e., EðB–VÞ ¼ ðB–VÞ ðB–VÞ0 :

In our study, values of the intrinsic color (B–V)0 for B star are taken from Cramer (1984), values of observed color (B–V) are mostly taken from the HTC and few from the Simbad database. Then the interstellar extinction law from Rieke and Lebofsky (1985) is adopted, i.e., AV = 3.09E(B–V), AJ = 0.282AV, AH = 0.175AV, AK = 0.112AV and AA = 0.033AV. It should be notable that the calculated values of color may be influenced by several factors that we have not included in this method. Early type Be stars are known to have flat energy distributions in the Paschen continuum because of an excess emission due to ionized circumstellar material (e.g., Schild, 1978, 1983). In this case, (B–V) would be larger than expected due to the presence of circumstellar material, giving an overestimate of E(B–V). Schild (1978) estimates this effect to be as large as 0.15m for B0–B3 stars, but

negligible for later B-type stars. Hence the IR interstellar reddening correction could be overestimated, which would result in the colors H–K, J–H and K–A being underestimated for these spectral types by up to 0.03m, 0.05m and 0.04m, respectively. Furthermore, we have not accounted for either the uncertainty in the spectral type classification or the intrinsic colors (B–V)0 of normal stars. The effect of misclassification of spectral will be greatest for later spectral types where the intrinsic color changes by as much as 0.1m (Dougherty et al., 1991, 1994). Finally, 1136 Be stars (except for sources with the upper-limited magnitudes at J, H, or K bands), which occupy about 96% of the samples (out of 1185), are corrected for interstellar extinction and the AV is listed in the (14) column of Table 1. In the following discussions, the magnitudes used in the JHKA bands are all corrected for the interstellar extinctions according to the method mentioned above. All discussions are restricted to

4. Color–color diagram The color–color diagram has long been proved to be an efficient and simple tool for identifying features of the infrared emission common to the sample stars and identifying stars with anomalous colors. After the interstellar extinction correction for magnitudes observed in JHK bands by 2MASS in Table 1, the J–H vs. H–K color–color diagram for 1136 sources is plotted in Fig. 1. In Fig. 1, the dashed line represents the blackbody distribution in 2MASS photometric system (calculated as the Planck function at the two respective frequencies and evaluated at a range of temperatures), and temperatures 3500, 5000 and 10,000 K are indicated; the shorter solid curve line represents the color–color relationship for main sequence stars

of spectral types B0 to G0 (Koornneef, 1983) and transformed to 2MASS photometric system using the relations in 2MASS ES, the longer solid line represents the power-law energy distribution Fk µ ka in 2MASS photometric system (calculated from the Eq. (2) in Section 5) and the values 0, 1 and 2 for a are indicated, the vector line represents the standard reddening line for AV = 5 (Rieke and Lebofsky, 1985), the typical uncertainty (0.08 magnitude) in each points is given in the lower right-hand corner of the figure. It can be seen in Fig. 1 that: (1) most stars cluster around the power-law energy distribution between a = 1 and a = 2. It should be notable that the IR excess of the sources located close to the power-law energy distribution between power 0.1 and 2 should be mainly due to the free–free and free–bound emission from the ionized gas around a Be star; (2) a number of stars cluster around a = 2 region, indicating high color temperature and little or no IR excess over the wavelength range of the colors considered; (3) some stars are on or near the blackbody distribution, indicating these stars radiate as blackbody or grey body; (4) few stars are located in the upper-right region, indicating very low color temperature and large IR excess.

It can be found from Table 1 and Fig. 1 that in Fig. 1, No. 253, 245 and 698 have large magnitude uncertainty (over 0.2 magnitudes) in J, H and/or K bands. Therefore, their position certainties in the diagram are very poor. We notice that, in Fig. 1, there seems to be evidence for two groups. One has stellar colors with some extension either due to a range in spectral type or following the extinction arrow. The second group is shifted by a small amount redward and is probably with a disk emission contribution. In order to see this separation more clearly, we plot the V–K versus J–K diagram, Fig. 2. In Fig. 2, the vector line represents the standard reddening line for AV = 2 (Rieke and Lebofsky, 1985). It can be seen from Fig. 2 that most Be stars fall into a stripe roughly along the reddening vector. It should be notable that the reddening law is uncertain and perhaps variable in dense clouds (see Martin, 1990). According to Martin & Whittet, EJ–H/EH–K is 1.74 for diffuse clouds and 1.64 for the dense cloud, while Rieke & LeboskyÕs reddening law gives a middle value, 1.7. Moreover, it is notable that in Fig. 1, the extension towards redder H–K seems to follow a line much shallower than power law distribution, which could

be caused by the difference between free–free and bound–free emission. If A magnitudes of Be stars in Table 1 are taken into account, then J–K versus K–A color–color diagram can be plotted in Fig. 3. In Fig. 3, the solid line represents the power-law energy distribution Fk µ ka and the values 0, 1 and 2 for a are indicated, the vector line represents the standard reddening line for AV = 4 (Rieke and Lebofsky, 1985). It can be seen from Fig. 3 that the IR excesses at A band, on the average, are larger than those at K band. This fact indicates that the IR excess of Be stars increases with wavelengths. This result can also be obtained from Fig. 1. This conclusion is in agreement with the result obtained by Dougherty et al. (1994) and Zhang et al. (2004).
5. Spectral indexes in the power-law distribution As several authors (e.g. Wright and Barlow, 1975; Waters et al., 1988; Dougherty et al., 1991) pointed out that the spectrum of free–free and free–bound emission from ionized gas has spectral index from 0.1 for optically thin emission to +2.0 for optically thick emission. If the spectra of a Be
star can be represented by a power law of the form Fk µ ka over some wavelength range Dk = k2 k1 (k1 < k2), where a is the spectral index, then ½k1 ½k2 ¼ 2:5 log½ðk1 =k2 Þa ðS k2 =S k1 Þ;

where [k1] and [k2] are dereddened magnitudes at wavelengths k1 and k2, respectively. Sk1 and Sk2 are absolute flux calibrations at wavelengths k1 and k2, respectively. According to Cohen et al. (2003), for 2MASS photometric system, SJ = 1594 Jy, SH = 1024 Jy and SK = 666.7 Jy, while SA = 58.49 Jy (Egan et al., 1999). Therefore, if [k1] and [k2] are known, then spectral index a between k1 and k2 can be obtained. The spectral index between J and K band is derived for 1136 stars and listed in Table 1. In Table 1, the value of uncertainty in a is derived from the total magnitude uncertainties at JK bands. Moreover, the spectral index between K and A band is also derived for 210 stars and listed in Table 1. 5.1. Discussion of spectral index between J band and K band It is found in Table 1 that: (1) 8 stars have spectral index less than 0.1, they occupy about 0.7%

of the samples (out of 1136); (2) 1118 stars have spectral index between 0.1 and 2, they occupy above 98%; (3) 10 stars have spectral index larger than 2, they occupy under 0.9%; (4) the mean spectral index of the samples (1136 stars in total) is 1.50 ± 0.34. For the stars having spectral index less than 0.1, they are found to be located at the upperright region in Figs. 1 and 2; this indicates that these stars have low color temperature and relatively thick circumstellar material. So, their large near IR excess would be due to thermal emission from the circumstellar material. These 8 Be stars are No. 581 = HD 98922 = IRAS 11202-5305, No. 247 = MWC 158 = HD 50138, No. 452 = HD 85567 = IRAS 09489-6044, No. 231= V700 Mon = HD 259431, No. 1008 = ups Sgr = MWC 313 = HD 181615, No. 1073 = V380 Cep = HD 200775, No. 596 = IRAS 11373-5953 = HD 101412 and No. 373 = CP-49 1566 = IRAS 08128-5000. For the stars having the spectral index between 0.1 and 2, they are found to be located at the mid and mid-low region in Fig. 1. Among them, a great number of them are located around a = 2 region, indicating high color temperature and little or no IR excess over the wavelength range of the colors under consideration. For those stars, the near IR excesses can be attributed to free–free and free–bound emission from the circumstellar material. For the stars having the spectral index more than 2, they are found to be located at the lowerleft region in Fig. 1, this indicates that these sources have very high color temperature and very thin or no circumstellar material. For few stars (e.g., a P 2.1, 4 stars in total), this case is significant and cannot be attributed to scatter in the date due to random noise. Two possible causes are considered (e.g., Dougherty et al., 1991, 1994): First, because of the variability in Paschen continuum and attenuation of photospheric emission by cool circumstellar material, the E(B–V) can be overestimated. If E(B–V) is overestimated by 0.3m, for example, then AV will be overestimated by 1m. In this case, J–K color would appear to be bluer by 0.2m, which would result in spectral index overestimated by 0.3. Second, there is cool cir-

cumstellar material along the line of sight to the star. If the material is sufficiently cool relative to the effective temperature of the underlying photosphere, it will absorb stellar photospheric flux and emit radiation with smaller source function, which can result in a net flux deficiency. 5.2. Discussion of spectral index between K and A band It is found in Table 1 that: (1) three stars have spectral index less than 0.1, they occupy about 1.4% of the samples (out of 210); (2) 207 stars have spectral index between 0.1 and 2, they occupy about 98.6%; (3) the mean spectral index of the samples (210 stars in total) is 1.14 ± 0.42. For the stars having spectral index less than 0.1, they are found to be located at the upper-right region in Fig. 3. For the stars having the spectral index between 0.1 and 2, they are found to be located at the mid and lower-left region in Fig. 3. These results are similar to those obtained in Section 5.1. It can be found from Table 1 that, among the eight stars having the spectral index between J and K bands less than 0.1, only 3 stars (No. 247, 596 and 231) have the MSX observation and they all have the spectral index between K and A bands less than 0.1.
6. Summary In this paper, we have identified the 2MASS associations for about 1300 Be stars listed in the Catalogue of Be stars (Jaschek and Egret, 1982, 1995). We have found that 1185 Be stars have the 2MASS association and have updated their photometry and spectroscopy using HTC and Simbad database. Then, we have searched the MSX data for these 1185 stars and found 225 stars have the flux at A band in MSX. Based on the interstellar extinction law from Rieke and Lebofsky (1985), we have made the interstellar extinction correction for 1136 Be stars (except for sources with the upper-limited magnitudes at J, H. or K bands). Based on the magnitudes at JHKA bands of the samples, we have studied some properties of the samples.

From the J–H versus H–K diagram and spectral indexes between J and K bands, it is found that: (1) a number of Be stars are located around a = 2 region, this implies that these stars have little or no IR excess between J and K band. However, it should be notable that almost all Be stars have IR excess over IRAS wavelength region (e.g., Zhang et al., 2004); (2) many Be stars are located close to the powerlaw energy distribution and have the spectral index between 0.1 and 2, this indicates that for these stars the near IR excess are mainly due to free–free and free–bound emission from the ionized material around Be stars as suggested previously; (3) 1118 stars have spectral index between 0.1 and 2, they occupy about 98.6% of the samples (out of 1136) and the mean spectral index derived for the samples is 1.50 ± 0.34; (4) 8 Be stars (No. 581 = HD 98922 = IRAS 11202-5305, No. 247 = MWC 158 = HD 50138, No. 452 = HD 85567 = IRAS 09489-6044, No. 231= V700 Mon = HD 259431, No. 1008 = ups Sgr = MWC 313 = HD 181615, No. 1073 = V380 Cep = HD 200775, No. 596 = IRAS 11373-5953 = HD 101412 and No. 373 = CP-49 1566 = IRAS 08128-5000.) are located at the upper-right region in Fig. 1 and have spectral index values less than 0.1. This suggests for these 8 stars the large near IR excess are likely attributed to circumstellar dust emission. From spectral indexes between K and A bands, it is found that: (1) three stars have spectral index less than 0.1, they occupy about 1.4% of the samples (out of 210); (2) 207 stars have spectral index between 0.1 and 2, they occupy about 98.6%; (3) the mean spectral index of the samples (210 stars in total) is 1.14 ± 0.42. It should be notable that, among the eight stars having the spectral index between J and K bands less than 0.1, only 3 stars (Nos. 247, 596 and 231) have the MSX observation and they all have the spectral index between K and A bands less than 0.1.
