The most recent advances in the fields of computer methods, as well as applied techniques and examples of practical engineering (in particular, those dealing with tll n n els, dams, slopes and mining engineering) will be discussed. Papers will introduce research and practice carried out in China on the application of computer methods. The official language of the Symposium will be English. Themes of the symposium are: Numerical and analytical methods, and application in tunnels with underground openings, dams, slopes and foundations, and mining engineering; Mechanical behavior of rock and joints--modelllng and application; Physical and computer modelling; Comparison of model tests, measurement and computer analysis; Field measurement and monitoring techniques, instruments, data processing, and utilization; Inverse problems, including back analysis; Optimization techniques; Computer codes in geomechanics, including numerical analysis, expert system, CAD/CAM; and Use of microcomputers and personal computers. An exhibition displaying publications, instruments, computer hardware and software, and other equipment will be held in conjunction with the Symposium. Post-Symposium study tours are being organized. This international symposium on geology and confinement of toxic wastes is being jointly organized by the French Committee of Engineering Geology and the Bureau de Recherches G~logiques et Mini~res, under the auspices of the International Association of Engineering Geology. The symposium sims to promote an exchange of scientific knowledge and know-how concerning the behaviour of barriers and their confinement performances. Proposed themes for the conference are: (1) Natural geological barriers; (2) Improvement of containment with treated geomaterials; (3) Cover and surface isolation for disposal sites; (4) Monitoring systems and safety of confinement; and (5) New confinement concepts. Like past FRAGBLAST symposia, this meeting will address researchers, scientists, and practitioners in the areas of blasting, mining, rock fracture mechanics, rock mechanics, structural geology, geology, geophysics, tectonics, numerical modelling, structural engineering, and civil engineering. As an international symposium, it provides the opportunity to guide researchers in relevant directions of both applied and theoretical research, with the aim of contributing to the advancement of science and research in the area of rock fragmentation by blasting. More than 50 original papers will be presented during the technical sessions. Principal speakers have been selected from around the world from mining companies, explosives suppliers and technical institutions, as recognized experts in the fields of blasting physics, instrumentation and measurement, performance evaluation, blast design and initiation, fragmentation mechanics, modeling and computer simulations, applications and blasting economics, depending on rock properties, case studies, legal and environmental issues.
