International Topical Conference of the Physics of Si02 and its Interfaces, Yorktown Heights, New York, U.S.A. An International Topical Conference on the Physics of Si02 and Its Interfaces will be held at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, U.S.A. on 22—24 March 1978, immediately preceding the March Meeting of the American Physical Society in Washington, D.C. This is a topical conference cosponsored by the American Physical Society, IBM, the Office of Naval Research, and the Advanced Research Projects Agency. The subject matter of the conference will be limited to the physics of Si02 and related oxides and their interfaces with other materials. Emphasis will be on fundamental questions on the atomic structure and stoichiometry, electrOnic structure, bonding, spectroscopy, vibrational and thermal properties, transport properties, defects and impurities. Subjects primarily concerned with the manufacture and performance of devices will not be addressed. The objective of the conference is to bring together physicists, chemists, engineers and other scientists who have been studying SiO2 and its interfaces with diverse motivations and varying points of view. It is intended that this conference will provide a needed forum for the presentation of basic work on the interfaces of Si02, which would complement other conferences that cover mainly technological aspects. The program will include both invited and contributed papers to be selected by the organizing committee. There will be no parallel sessions, Advance abstracts will appear in the Bulletin of American Physical Society and the proceedings will be published, Abstracts of contributed papers should be received by 28 November 1977 and should conform to the rules set by the Bulletin of the American Physical Society. Authors may submit covering letters to assist the Committee in the selection of papers for presentation.
Information: Dr. Sokrates T. Pantelides, Conference Chairman, IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, P.O. Box 218, Yorktown Heights, New York 10598, U.S.A. 3—5 April 1978 Topical Conference on Atomic Scale Structure of Amorphous Solids, Yorktown Heights, New York, U.S.A. A three day conference on atomic scale structure of amorphous solids will be held at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, on 3—5 April 1978, to follow the “March” APS meeting which will be held in Washington, D.C., the week before. The main goal of the conference is exchange of information among scientists involved with experimental structural studies of amorphous metals, semiconductors, insulators, and polymers, as well as those who are constructing, generating and analyzing structural models which may be relevant to these various classes of amorphous solids. The conference program will consist of invited papers, chosen to provide an overview of the current state of atomic-scale-structure research in the four areas listed above, and of periods for extended discussions. Contributed papers in these areas are also solicited and will be presented in poster sessions. Abstracts of both invited and contributed papers will be published in the March 1978 issue of the Bulletin, but only invited papers will be included in the Conference Proceedings. Abstracts for contributed papers, in standard APS format, must reach G.S. Cargill III (address given below) by December 16, 1977. The conference organizing committee consists of G.S. Cargill III and P. Chaudhari (co-chairmen), P. Duwez, R. Grigorovici, M.R. Hoare, A. Howie, T. Masumoto, W. Paul, R.S. Stein, and D. Turnbull. The conference is organized under sponsorship of the American Physical Society, with financial assistance

The Eighth International Symposium on Electronic Structure of Metals and Alloys will be held at GaulMg, near Dresden, GDR from April 17—28, 1978. The Ninth and Tenth Symposiums are also planned for April 23—27, 1979 and April 14—18, 1980 respectively, at the same venue. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss current research on theoretical aspects of the electronic structure of metals and alloys. The following topics wifi outline the scope of the meetings: Calculations of the electronic spectrum, soft X-ray spectra, optical and related properties, cluster calculations. Theory of phonon spectra, binding energies and related properties. Effect of impurities and surfaces on the properties of metals. The GaulMg Symposia take place in a beautiful castle. Attendance is limited to 50 participants. Proceedings of the conferences will be published. We request that you inform us by October 1, 1977 (1978/1979) if you are interested in attending one of these symposia and whether you can offer a paper on one of the subjects under discussion. Further information and a final confirmation of your attendance wifi then be mailed to you. Information Prof. Dr. habil. P.
