37th PatInfo Conference (2015), 10e12 June 2015, Ilmenau, Germany
Keywords: PatInfo 2015 Patent information Patents Trademarks
1. Introduction The PatInfo20151 was held this year, as usual, in Ilmenau, Germany, in the beautiful Thuringen County. This annual conferences has a long history and started in 1963 and is an annual event. Every year in June, in Ilmenau, organized by Christoph Hoock and co-workers. Peter Kallas, the 2015 IPI eaward winner, is member of the program advisory board. The conference lasts for one and a half day and features approximately 20 formal presentations, interspersed with short new product information presentations. This year's motto was “IP: Cooperation, competition and confrontation”. The conference took place in the “Festhalle”, and was opened on Thursday morning by Prof. Peter Scharff (Rector TU Ilmenau), after the welcome reception on Wednesday evening in the “Fischerhutte”. This conference differs from others like IPIConfex, ICIC and EPOPIC as it has a broader focus. It is not only covering Patent Information but also Trademarks, Utility Models and Design patents. A main difference is also the language. This conference has German as language for all presentations and occasionally lectures are allowed to be held in English (one or two). 2. Plenary sessions All sessions are plenary. After the opening on Thursday the conference started with an update from the German Patent Office (DPMA), followed by presentations from EPO (Heiko Wongel) and WIPO (Claus Matthes). Further presentations included also Trademarks, Utility Models and Designs. Technology Transfer was an important topic and was presented
by Bernhard Smandek and Mustafa Cakir. It was Interesting to hear about the German Invention store, where all technology related inventions are available for the different technology sectors. The Invention Store2 is a service of Technology Alliance, which provides you with, according to your individual interest, information about the latest innovations and new technologies from more than 200 German scientific institutions. Other presentations are on text mining, Workflow Automization, Confiscation (“Beschlagnahmung”), for instance on Exhibitions (is allowed by German Law). Friday was mainly focused on legal issues, with presentations from the EPO (Christiaan Soltmann) about the strategic use of INPADOC data, as well as some guidance in searching for EPOOppositions in another presentation. The very fast running schedule and the broad coverage of topics makes this conference very attractive. 3. German Patent Information user group and certification A special attention was given to the foundation of a German Patent Information User Group. The request came from the steering group, responsible for setting the Certification for Patent Information Specialists. This was presented by Bernd Wolter (Siemens) being one of the coordinators (together with Bettina de Jong and Susanne Hantos) of the Certification program. A short survey3 was distributed and the audience was requested if a German User Group is necessary also in view of the discussion around the certification. More information can be found at the QPIP website.4 4. Conclusions Overall it was a very useful conference, especially for those who like to have a broader view on the IP-Landscape and not only concentrate on Patent Information. I can recommend this conference as a good place to learn more about the IP-field. The great diversity of topics make this conference very attractive. A lot of opportunities were given for “networking” as well. Of course it depends on your personal interest which presentation would be the most interesting. A complete overview of the 2
