Silicon carbide coated carbon fibers and composite materials incorporating these fibers are disclosed. The silicon carbide coating provides electrical insulation and improved resistance to environmental degradation. The coated fibers may be embedded in organic, metal or glass matrices to form useful composite materials.

Disclosed is a method for providing a shear stable graphite-in-oil dispersion by means of selected non-polymeric dispersing agents. The oxygen content of the graphite particles is at least about 1% by weight of the total weight of the ground graphite particle including oxygen.

4372790 4312936 PROCESS FOR PRODUCING CARBON BLACK

Vitaly Surovikin; Aiexandr R Rogov; Gennady V Sazhin; Georgy Gorjunov; Kleve, Federal Republic of Germany; assigned to Ipsen Industries International GmbH A process for producing carbon black comprises combustion of a fuel with air to form a stream of products of complete combustion of the fuel, whereinto a hydrocarbon feedstock is then added. The hydrocarbon feedstock is decomposed by absorption of heat from the combustion products, with the formation of a carbon black containing effluent. A portion of the carbon black containing effluent is collected and the remaining portion of the carbon black containing effluent is quenched by introducing a cooling agent thereinto. Thereafter carbon black is recovered from the remaining portion of the carbon black containing effluent. The collected portion of the carbon black containing effluent is fed, according to the invention, into the combustion chamber as fuel.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR THE CONTROL OF THE CARBON LEVEL OF A GAS MIXTURE REACTING IN A FURNACE CHAMBER

Werner Gohring; Cornelius H Luiten; Kleve, Federal Republic of Germany; assigned to Ipsen Industries lnternational GmbH ,_____ __._.._.____ ________._ i‘ . .....__. _......_......

A method and device for control of the carbon level of a gas mixture reacting in a heat treatment furnace, which gas mixture arises by means of the introduction of a fuel containing hydrocarbon into the furnace chamber, the reaction products of which are not in a state of water-gas equilibrium and not in a state of methane gas equilibrium and which gas mixture has an excess of methane. The controlled condition is detemined by a first measurement device from the portion of the gas component CO which is present in the furnace chamber as a first measured value, and by a second measurement device from the electrical voltage of an

oxygen-ion-conducting solid body electrolyte as a second measured value and by a third measurement device from the furnace chamber temperature as the third measured value. A regulating member is controlled as a result to automatically change the quantity flow of the supply to the furnace chamber until correspondence of the measured carbon level with its desired value exists.

The rate at which deposits are formed in carbon black reactors is reduced by feeding a contaminant rich feed oil stream into the reactor surrounded by a substantially contaminant free feed oil stream. 4371454 PROCESS FOR PREPARING SPHERICAL CARBON MATERIAL AND SPHERICAL ACTIVATED CARBON Kaj Hisatsugu; Kazuhiro Watanabe; Iwaki, Japan; assigned to Kureha Kagaku Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha

A gas-insulated power transmission line includes an outer enclosure containing an inner conductor and insulating supports for insulatably supporting the inner conductor within the outer enclosure. An electrically insulating gas electrically insulates the inner conductor from the outer enclosure. The outer enclosure is comprised of two separate components; an outer sheath made of carbon steel, a grounded inner sheath disposed within the outer sheath and made of aluminum. The inner sheath, containing the inner conductor and the insulating supports, is assembled separately from the outer sheath and then the inner sheath assemblage is inserted within the outer sheath at the final field location.

4371511 DECREASING CARBON BLACK REACTOR FOULING RATE

Spherical carbon material or a spherical activated carbon is prepared from an admixture of pitch, amorphous carbon and a viscosity-~ontroliing agent by the process comprising the step of heating and extruding the admixture into strings, cooling and cutting the string into fragments, introducing the fragments into hot water to obtin spherical particles of the admixture, removing the viscosity-controlling agent from the spherical particles, infusibilizing the spherical particles and carbonizing the spherical particles and further activating the carbonized spherical carbon particles.
