PATENT ABSTRACTS 4532204
MUTATION ASSAYS INVOLVING BLOOD CELLS THAT METABOLIZE TOXIC SUBSTANCES Charles Crespi. William Thilly assigned to Massachusetts Institute of Technology A line of human blood cells which have high levels of oxidative activity (such as oxygenase, oxidase, peroxidase, and hydroxylase activity) is disclosed. Such cells grow in suspension culture, and are useful to determine the mutagenicity of xenobiotic substances that are metabolized into toxic or mutagenic substances. Mutation assays using these cells, and other cells with similar characteristics, are also disclosed.
4532206 BETA-STREPTOCOCCUS SELECTIVE MEDIUM John Robinson, Gregory D Rodgers assigned to Vitek Systems lnc A liquid beta-streptococcus selective medium for the growth and detection of beta-hemolytic streptococci without allowing the growth of enterococci and other non- beta-hemolytic streptococci, consisting essentially of 0.2-0.4 gin. pullulan as carbohydrate source based on 93-72 ml water, a protein source such as a combination of Proteose Peptone £3, (a dried meat digest) and Biosate (pancreatic digest of casein combined with yeast autolysate), an inhibitor of the growth of Pseudomonas, such as thallous acetate, an inhibitor of the growth of gram negative organisms other than Pseudomonas, such as nalidixic acid, an inhibitor of the growth of staphylococci such as Gentamycin, and reduced aniline blue indicator.
4532220 ASSAYS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF CARCINOGENICITY Sara Lavi, Kiryat Ono, Israel assigned to Yeda Research and Development Company Ltd There is provided an assay for the determination of the carcinogenicity of chemical and physical agents, by exposing a selected line of tumor virus transformed cells to the agent to bc tested and
determining whether such exposure induces endogenous viral DNA replication in such cells. which induction is indicative of the carcinogenicity of the tested agent by in situ hybridization. There is provided a kit for carrying out such assay.
4533630 T O X I N S A N D A N T I B O D I E S O F C. DIFFICILE Tracy D Wilkins, David M Lyerly Mono-specific antibodies for each of toxin A and toxin B of C. difficile are produced and used in an assay for toxin A and toxin B, respectively. Purified toxin A of C. difficile is also produced.
4535062 APPARATUS FOR GROWING MICROORGANISMS Hans Muller, Erlenbach, Switzerland assigned to Chemap AG Growing of microorganisms takes place in a fermenter in which simultaneously products of metabolism are separated and withdrawn by microfiltration with the aid of a diaphragm filter, and a suspension of microorganisms is stirred in the fermenter in the region immediately surrounding the diaphragm filter.
4537678 ROTARY BIOLOGICAL CONTACTOR Christopher Thissen assigned to Walker Process Corporation A rotary biological contactor for treating waste water comprising a center core or shaft and a plastic media on the shaft and arranged in a multiplicity of modules spaced from each other. each module including a multiplicity of turns of plastic sheet material with edges at the ends of the module, the turns of plastic sheet material having elongate undulations extending obliquely of the rotation axis and of the ends of the module, adjacent turns of the plastic sheet material having the undulations extending transversely of each other so that each elongate undulation traverses a multiplicity of undulations of the next adjacent turn, each undulation being welded to the undulations of the next adjacent turn at each place where the undulations touch
