AUTO-PRESEPARATION OF CARBON BLACK
This invention describes a substantially homogeneous, optically anisotropic carbonaceous pitch characterized in that the major portion of said pitch consists of a continuous, optically anisotropic phase, said optically anisotropic phase contains spherules of an optically isotropic phase having diameters of not more than about 100 mum and dispersed in said optically anisotropic phase, the content of said optically isotropic spherules is up to about 20% on the basis of said pitch as a whole, said pitch contains at least about 30 wt % (based on said pitch) of a quinoline-soluble component, and said pitch has a lower softening point.
Paul J Cheng assigned to Philhps Petroleum Company Aerosols such as a carbon black containing smoke are subjected to an auto-preseparation by passing the aerosol or smoke through loose particles collected and accumulated and only thereafter passing the aerosol or smoke through a separator such as a filter bag. This changes the characteristic of the aerosol in either reducing the total content of solids or increasing the average particle size of the solids in the aerosol or achieving both of these features. Thereby the load on the downstream separator and the capacity of the separator, e.g. a carbon black filter house, is substantially reduced.

William R King assigned to Phillips Petroleum Company
A method of producing a precursor pitch for use in the production of carbon fibers, which comprises hydrogenating a soft or middle tar pitch to obtain a hydrogenated pitch containing no free carbon and high molecular weight components and then subjecting it to a heat treatment. In this method, the hydrogenation is carried out in the presence of tetralin at a temperature of 400
A carbon black reactor having tangential entry of combustion gases is provided with semicircular ramps to smoothly guide the flow of each tangentially introduced stream of combustion gases toward the reactor outlet enough to avoid turbulent impact with other tangentially introduced combustion gas streams.
