IV

the content of Al in the matrix metal is less than about 0.6% by weight. The carbon fibers may desirably be high strength carbon fibers, i.e. carbon fibers which have low graphitization level.

4601892 PROCESS FOR PRODUCING CARBON BLACK

number times the iodine number divided by 1000 being 350 to 1000 and/or the product of the molasses number times the methylene blue number divided by 10 being 500 to 1200. It is produced by adding aqueous alkali or alkaline earth carbonate solution and/or aqueous alkali or alkaline earth hydroxide solution by means of lance during the steam activation of lignite coke in a rotating tube.

4603157 C Jac Hart, Lawrence K Murray, David L Rogers, Richard Divis assigned to Phillips Petroleum Company A generally cylindrical carbon black reactor for the production of soft carbon blacks is modified to produce a wider range of products by the installation of a choke.

4603042 METHOD FOR MAKING CARBON FIBERS Takash Setsuie, Yuichi Fukui, Tada Kobayashi, Ohtake, Japan assigned to Mitsubishi Rayon Co Ltd There is disclosed a method for making high strength carbon fibers which comprises carbonizing acrylic fibers applied with an aqueous dispersion of a silicone compound represented by the following general formula (I) dispersed with an emulsifier represented by the following general formula (II), the total amount of the silicone compound and the emulsifier being 0.01 to 10.0% by weight (owf) and the weight ratio of the emulsifier to the silicone compound being 0.05 to 0.4: See Patent for Chemical Structure (I) Rl IO(CH2R13CHO)qR12 (II) (where the symbols are as defined hereinbefore).

4603119 PROCESS FOR PRODUCTION OF ACTIVATED CARBON FROM LIGNITE COKE Alfons Karl, Erwin Walter, Peter Kleinschmit, Herman Gottschlich, Roland Kutz, Detlev Koth, D 6466 Grl, Federal Republic Of Germana Activated carbon is produced from lignite coke. It is characterized by the product of the molasses

INTERMEDIATE FOR COMPOSITE MATERIAL Hajime Asai, Fujio Nakao, Ohtake, Japan assigned to Mitsubishi Rayon Co Ltd An intermediate for composite materials which comprises a carbon fiber or a graphite fiber having a tensile strength of 300 to 600 kg/mm2 and a tensile modulus of 30 to 50 t/mm2 and giving an intensity of electric current per unit surface area as determined by a potential sweep method in the range of 0.1 to 0.4 muA/cm2 and a matrix resin.

4603731 GRAPHITE FIBER THERMAL RADIATOR Randall B Olsen assigned to GA Technologies Inc A thermal radiating system particularly suited for use in space applications is provided with a high ratio of heat transfer to weight and a thin and light weight construction. The radiator includes heat pipes that are spaced to minimize damage from micrometeorites and through which a heat transfer medium is circulated from a heat generating source. Graphite fibers are used for their small mass per unit area and are preferably of a heat treated type having a substantially improved thermal conductivity over conventional graphite fibers. The graphite fibers are associated with the heat pipes and constitute the principal radiating surface of the system. In one embodiment, the graphite fibers are disposed in substantially parallel, co-planar relationship with respect to each other and in substantially perpendicular relationship to their associated heat pipe, thus giving the radiator in the array the appearance of a comb. In a second embodiment, the graphite fibers are in the form of a belt that is entrained about two rotatable heat pipes.
