fusibilization treatment and then to carbonization treatment or both carbonization treatment graphitization treatment, and subsequent characterized in that a dimethyl polysiloxane having a viscosity at 25 degrees C. in the range of 12,000 to 1,OOO,OOO cSt is applied to the fibers after the infusibilization treatment, and the infusibilized fibers with the dimethyl polysiloxane thus applied thereto are then subjected to the carbonization treatment or both the carbonization treatment and the subsequent graphitization treatment.

CORROSION AND WEAR RESISTANT GRAPHITE MATERIAL Richard Chandler, Lutfi H Amra, Bedford Hts, OH, United Statee assigned to Kennecott Corporation The invention provides a composite carbon or graphite having desirable properties such as corrosion and wear resistance. The invention combines a graphite substrate with a protective porous zone of silicon carbide. The whole body of graphite plus silicon carbide then is infiltrated with aluminum phosphate. An adhered barrier of silicon carbide, ranging in thickness between 0.015 and 0.050 inch thick is integrated with a graphite stratum to form a very hard surface, resistant to mechanical and chemical wear. The silicon carbide barrier is closely compatible to the graphite substrate, in resistance to thermal shock and in qualities of thermal expansion. In order to improve oxidation resistance further, a new composition was formed by infiltrating aluminum phosphate through the silicon carbide into the graphite to form a single body of composite graphite.

4619796 PROCESS FOR PREPARATION OF POROUS CARBON PLATES Yasuhir Awata, Osamu Iwaki, Tokyo, Japan assigned to Oji Paper Company Ltd Porous carbon plates are made by forming a sheet from a mixture comprising 65-90 weight parts of a carbon fiber-forming organic fiber and lo-35 weight parts of a pulp according to a paper-making method; impregnating the sheet with a solution of an organic polymeric substance to prepare an impregnated sheet; subjecting the impregnated sheet to an oxidizing treatment; and then carbonizing the infusibilized sheet at a temperature of at least 800 degrees C. in an inert gas atmosphere.
