PATENT ABSTRACTS

4675298 PETRI DISH Gerhard Brusewitz, Bergisch Gladbach, Federal Republic Of Germany assigned to Madaus & Co The present invention provides a Petri dish, especially for culturing micro-organisms, comprising a circular lower dish and a cover loosely laid thereon. Projections are formed provided on the periphery of the inner surface of the cover and, matching depressions are formed on the rim of the lower dish. This permits adjusting a gap between the cover and dish for control of gas exchange between the interior of the Petri dish and the atmosphere.

4676956 APPARATUS FOR PHOTOSYNTHESIS Kei Mori, Tokyo. Japan An apparatus for photosynthesis includes a unique arrangement for supplying light and CO2containing air to a reaction chamber in a sure and stable manner. The reaction chamber is irradiated for photosynthesis from the inside and~or outside thereof in an intermittent mode. CO2-containing air is routed from a CO2 source to a rotatable disc which is positioned in a bottom portion of the apparatus. Part of the CO2containing air is ejected sideways from the disc to cause it into rotation, while the rest of the air is ejected upwardly into the reaction chamber. The reaction chamber is partitioned into a plurality of compartments which are sequentially supplied with the CO2-containing air in accordance with the rotation of the disc,

4680259 ANALYTICAL ELEMENT AND METHOD FOR COLORIMETRIC DETERMINATION OF TOTAL CHOLESTEROL Peter E Cumbo, Robert F Fricker assigned to Eastman Kodak Company An analytical element is designed for the colorimetric determination of total cholesterol in aqueous liquids, such as biological fluids. This element comprises an absorbent material and critical amounts of cholesterol ester hydrolase

(from about 1500 to about 12.000 1.U. m2) and a nonionic surfactant (frOm about 5 and up to. but less than 11 g/m2). The use of these ranges of reagents reduces the potential for interference by triglycerides present in a test sample. Total cholesterol is determined with this element by detection of a color change resulting from a series of enzymatic reactions which produce hydrogen peroxide.

4680263 CONTINUOUS ALCOHOL MANUFACTURING PROCESS USING IMMOBILIZED MICROORGANISM Tomiak Yamada. Masuo Kamihonoki, Hiroshi Sagara, Hiroshi Umino, Yokohama, Japan assigned to New Energy Development Organization: JGC CorporationSanraku-Ocean Co Ltd A feed liquid (sugar-containing liquid) is continuously fed to a fermenter packed with an immobilized microorganism, which is obtained by immobilizing an alcohol producing microorganism on a carrier, for alcohol fermentation. The fermentation liquid is continuously taken out of said fermenter and is heated to a temperature of 35£20 + 0 to 80+20 + 0 C. This liquid is introduced into a flash tank maintained at reduced pressure and is divided into an alcoholcontaining steam and a liquid. The alcoholcontaining steam is condensed and recovered as alcohol, while the separated liquid is cooled and is cycled back to said fermenter,

46802~ CELL CULTURE CHAMBER WITH MEANS FOR AUTOMATIC REPLENISHMENT OF NUTRIENT Alexander Tschopp, Claudy-Gabriell Gruenblat-Nordau, Beat Huber, Augusto Cogoli, Zswitzerlana assigned to Contraves AG The apparatus which includes a cell culture chamber enables cell biological experiments with botanical, zoological or homological cells to be carried out. The apparatus comprises a pump housing and a cell culture block with a cell culture chamber therein in which the cell culture medium or nutrient can be automatically and continually exchanged by the action of an osmotic fluid pump connected to the chamber. The osmotic fluid pump is activated by a fluid filled
