RACS Award for Excellence In Surgery valve replacement in Brisbane. His cold-preserved viable homograft valve bank became a standard for many departments worldwide. He has rekindled his interest in xenograft valves using modern techniques of valve preparation and preservation. Throughout the years, he has examined and re-examined his results in a critical way, clarifying the proper role of the competing technologies in patients. This multifaceted valve work in the animal laboratory, at the bench top, in clinical surgery and in painstaking follow-up is his contribution to surgical innovation, His place as a leader is reflected by the present status of his department in the world of heart surgery. He commands a talented staff, and their work stands up to any scrutiny. Mark O’Brien has trained many surgeons in Brisbane, in Australia and throughout the world. He has been among the most consistent supporters of young trainees from overseas, especially from China. He has served on major committees of the College, the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand and the National Heart Foundation. On the international scene, he has participated in over 60 workshops and has produced and presented films and videos for educational purposes. Guest lectureships include those of Foundation Visitor for the Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery of our College and the Kempson Maddox lecturer of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand. Mark O’Brien’s contributions to cardiac surgery are admired and recognised throughout the world.
he Royal Australasian College of Surgeons has presented the Award for Excellence in Surgery to Mark O’Brien. Born and schooled in Melbourne, Mark O’Brien graduated with Honours from the University of Melbourne Medical School. He gained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1961 and of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1964. In the early 1960s Mark O’Brien underwent additional training at the Brompton Hospital in London and the Presbyterian Medical Centre in San Francisco. He was Assistant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne during the establishment of its Open Heart Unit. In 1966 he was appointed Cardiac Surgeon in Charge at the Chermside Hospital, Brisbane and continues to head that department. The Chermside Hospital, now named the Prince Charles Hospital, has grown to be the busiest cardiac unit in Australia, well known internationally and renowned for its high level of performance, as well as for the aortic surgery for which Mark O’Brien is famous. This interest in valve surgery, particularly the use of tissue valves for aortic valve replacement, stems from Mark O’Brien’s early interest in experimental valve surgery in London and San Francisco. Along with Sir Donald Ross and Sir Brian Barratt-Boyes, he pioneered the use of tissue valves in humans. At St Vincent’s, he introduced a technique of valve replacement using formaldehyde-preserved pig valve.
