PATENT ABSTRACTS 4737289 PROCESS FOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT Frank J Castaldi, Timothy W Trofe, Gordon Page, Kevin Adams assigned to Radian Corporation Free cyanide-containing wastewater is treated to destroy the free cyanide content thereof by the step of treating said water with sulfur in the form of polysulfide in an integrated process wherein thiocyanate is also eliminated to produce a nonhazardous wastewater effluent and treating the wastewater in a second step with cultures of bacteria of the genus Thiobacillus in combination with nitrifying bacteria which oxidize ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. The first step is preferably carried out in the presence of added metallic zinc.

also, after separation of the gas formed, is introduced into a distribution chamber for the separation of any floating sludge particles from sludge particles that can deposit. The latter, if necessary, may be guided to a post-clarification device for the removal of sludge (biomass). The apparatus for carrying out this process consists of a reactor comprising a buffer zone (14) limited by an inner cylinder (7), which buffer zone is connected to the distribution chamber (15) over the distribution impellers (6). Permeable intermediate membranes (16) and filler bodies (17) with a sludge bed (18) stored on top of them form the reaction chamber (19), which is separated by means of the compact intermediate layer (8) and siphon (10) from the distribution chamber (5) formed by the distribution cylinder (11) and connected by means of connecting lines (21). A periodically self-cleaning filter (65) pre-switched in the direction of flow to the discharge formed as an overflow groove (35) serves for the retention of the finest biomass corpuscules.

PROCESS FOR THE DEGRADATION OF S-TRIAZINE DERIVATIVES IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS

PROCESS FOR TREATING SOUR WATER IN OIL REFINERIES

Alasdair M Cook, Ralf Hutter, Wswitzerlana assigned to Ciba-Geigy Corporation The invention relates to a novel microorganism of the genus Rhodococcus, to the use thereof in a process for the microbiological degradation of amino-s-triazines and cyanuric acid in wastewaters, as well as to a process for the microbiological degradation of s-triazine derivatives to biomass or to degradation products such as NH304 and/or chloride, which comprises the combined use of said microorganism with Pseudomonas spp.

4746433 PROCESS FOR THE ANAEROBIC TREATMENT OF ORGANIC SUBSTRATES Ernst Nobl, Astrid Nobl, A 3500 Krems a d Donau, Austria assigned to Nobl Ernst A process for the anaerobic treatment of organic substrates is disclosed. The substrate to be treated is mixed with biomass, then passed through a bed of filler bodies and sludge, and

Colin G Grieves, Robert J Baechle, John M Considine, Lawrence M Bristow assigned to Amoco Corporation Sour process water from an oil refinery is partially treated by oil extraction. The partially treated water can be biologically treated, upgraded and further purified in a cooling tower, trickle filter, and/or activated sludge tank. 4746435 BIOCHEMICAL PROCESS FOR PURIFYING CONTAMINATED WATER Hisao Onishi, Ryozo Numazawa, Hiroshima, Japan assigned to Mitsubishi Rayon Co Ltd A process for treating contaminated water containing BOD sources and nitrogen sources, which comprises supplying oxygen or oxygencontaining gas from one side of a gas-permeable membrane to grow microorganisms including aerobic bacteria and anaerobic bacteria on the other side of the gas-permeable membrane, and performing decomposition of the BOD sources and nitrification and denitrification simultaneously by the action of these microorganisms.
