4857243 PROCESS OF MAKING MICROSPHERULES OF ACTIVATED CARBON Hubert Von Blucher, Hasso Von Blucher, Ernest De Ruiter, 4000 Dl, Federal Republic Of Germana A method of making activated carbon microspherules including kneading activated carbon particles of a size below 100 mum, together with a dispersion of a water-insoluble synthetic resin to form an intimate mixture; pressing the mixture through a screen having holes related to the size of the desired microspherules; powdering the pressed material; and granulating and drying the resulting microspherules.

STRETCH FIBERS OF GLASS RESIN

Thomas Armiger, David H Edison, Herbert G Lauterbach, James R Layton, Richard K Okine assigned to E I Du Pont De Nemours and Company A coating of a viscous lubricant applied prior to stretch-breaking permits forming slivers of stretch-broken carbon fibers. When an antistatic ingredient is added to the viscous lubricant cohesive slivers of stretch-broken glass fibers can be formed. composites of matrix resin reinforced with these slivers exhibit high strength, tensile stiffness, and good formability.

4857395 GRAPHITE COMPOSITES AND PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE THEREOF Kenneth C Benton, David A Pierman, Joseph R Fox assigned to The Standard Oil Company Graphite composite articles comprising a graphite structure formed from a porous graphite material and an impregnant selected from the group consisting of glass precursors and ceramic precursors, filling the pores and coating the sur-

face of the structure. The present invention also provides a process for the manufacture of graphite composites comprising the steps of infiltrating a porous graphite structure with a material selected from the group consisting of glass precursors and ceramic precursors and subsequently converting the precursor to a glass or a ceramic respectively.

4832932 CARBON FIBER FOR COMPOSITE MATERIAL Hisashi Tada, Masahiro Saruta, Takashi Akira Agata, Setuo Kashiyama, Murata, Nagoya, Japan assigned to Mitsubishi Rayon Co Ltd Oxidizing treatment of carbon fibers under specific conditions provides carbon fibers having oxygen concentration (0 1S/Cl S atom number ratio) in the surface part of the carbon fibers of 0.05 to 0.30 as measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, coefficients of water-extractable fraction of up to 2.0, and coefficients of tow spread of at least l* 10-3. These carbon fibers are excellent in adhesion to various matrix resins and when mixed as reinforcements with matrix resins, provide composite materials superior especially in impact resistance. The thus obtained composite materials are useful for aircraft, automobiles, and general industrial materials.

4834647 METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONVEYING CARBON BLACK WHICH INHIBITS THE BUILD-UP OF CARBON BLACK FINES ON CONVEYING SURFACES Ted G Key A method and apparatus for conveying carbon black pellets to avoid breaking up the pellets and inhibit caking on the conveying means which may be a screw type conveyor that is sufficiently heated to inhibit caking of the carbon black. The conveying means is centerless ground to maintain uniform distances of relatively moving parts and the contact surfaces are electroless plated to further inhibit caking of the carbon black on the conveying means.
