An imaging apparatus and method which provides for reconstruction of images from sampled data with improved resolution, improved signalto-noise, optimal edge detection, and pattern recognition. The apparatus and method are characterized by the use of a priori information (constraints) and a high pass filter on the data to obtain superresolution reconstruction of image data. An object function is approximated by a series of known model functions such as box car and polynomial functions. Solution of the object function depends on a finite number of unknowns whereupon the model parameters can be perfectly resolved to obtain infinite or superresolution. The apparatus and method have parmagnetic application in nuclear ticular resonance imaging as well as other imaging modalities.

A steady-state free precession fast NMR pulse sequence includes a readout gradient waveform which refocuses the transverse magnetization to produce an S- NMR signal during the subsequent pulse sequence. This readout gradient waveform is shaped to null the gradient first moment and to thereby suppress flow and motion artifacts. In an alternative embodiment, crusher pulses employed in the phase encoding or slice select gradients are also flow compensated.

An NMR antenna probe has at least one substantially circular surface coil arranged in a plane and a surface coil having substantially a Figure-8 shape, substantially coplanar with the at least one circular surface coil. The Figure-8 coil has a cross-over portion which is located substantially coaxial with the axis of the at least one circular surface coil. The coil corresponding to the least-NMR-sensitive nucleus is circular, while the non-circular coil corresponds to the most-NMR-sensitive nucleus. The circular coil is positioned on the side of the NMR probe closest to the subject to be studied.
