XX steam operation of the engine. The computer defaults to fossil fuel operation of the engine when superheated water and steam operation conditions do not exist in the counterflow heat exchangers.

alternating current signal corresponding to the circular dichroism absorption to a direct current component allows for the constant monitoring of the concentration of the sample compound in the flowing solution. The flowing solution may be under high temperature and pressure and may comprise a supercritical fluid.

50362~ DEVICE FOR COUNTING PARTICLES OF IONIZING RADIATION AND ITS APPLICATION TO IMPLEMENTING A METHOD OF MEASURING THE RATE OF LEAKAGE BETWEEN THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY CIRCUITS OF A STEAM GENERATOR Alain Dubail, Alain Pailhes, Francis Schulcz, Clamart, France assigned to Electricite de France (Service National) A device for counting particles of ionizing radiation comprises a detector and a reference source on the input side of the detector delivering reference radiation the spectrum of which is situated outside the spectrum of the ionizing radiation to be detected. The device further comprises an arrangement for discriminating the amplitude and energy of the received ionizing radiation and means for adjusting the relative positions of the amplitude levels on a scale of amplitude and the amplitudes of the pulses generated by the reference radiation. The device may be applied to monitoring the flowrate of leakage between primary and secondary circuits of a nuclear power plant steam generator.

50362~ CONTINUOUS CONCENTRATION MONITORING BY CIRCULAR DICHROISM Donald Leyden assigned to Philip Morris Inc Circularly polarized monochromatic electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength correlating the maximum absorbance of a sample compound is directed through a flowing solution containing the sample compound, which exhibits circular dichroism activity, and a plurality of other compounds. Measurement of the circular dichroism effect and comparison of an

5036309 PORTABLE SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR CONTINUOUSLY MONITORING PROTECTIVE CLOTHING FOR DETECTING AND SIGNALING THE OCCURRENCE OF A BREACH THEREIN Everett G Dennison A portable unit is releasably attachable to a worker, and an electrical network that has fully insulated wires releasably connected to the worker and a workpiece to the portable unit. The unit includes an amplifier and a sensitivity-adjusting element so that breaches in the worker's protective clothing as small as one molecule can be large enough to cause activation of an alarm.

5036311 UV EXPOSURE MONITORING SYSTEM Dan Moran, Yonatan Gerlitz, Ramat Gan, Israel A UV exposure mointoring system for measuring UV radiation impinging on an object, the system comprising apparatus for measuring incident solar UV radiation in a weighted manner corresponding to the erythemal action spectrum of human skin, whereby the accuracy of the measurements is substantially unaffected by the amgle of incidence of incoming radiation over a wide range of angles.

New Patents a~pWaSte combustion system includes a porous paratus for supplying and spraying a suitable amount of water from at least the bottom floor surface and/or a lower inner surface of the furnace. Water vapor generated from the water is dispersed, and it undergoes the water gas reactions with red-hot carbon during a combustion process. The water gas reactions serve as the endothermic reactions which control the temperature within the furnace into suitable temperatures. In addition, while secondary air from a secondary air introducing apparatus is being supplied into the combustion chamber of the furnace, the burning zone of the waste is subjected to violent agitation and stirring actions so as to limit the generation of such substances as nitrogen oxides and soot, hence, to reduce the proportion of pollutants contained in the exhaust gases.

5039523 NOVEL BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS ISOLATE DENOTED B.T. PS81F, ACTIVE AGAINST LEPIDOPTERAN PESTS, AND A GENE ENCODING A LEPIDOPTERAN-ACTIVE TOXIN Jewel Payne, August J Sick assigned to Mycogen Corporation A novel B.t. toxin gene encoding a protein toxic to lepidopteran insects has been cloned from a novel lepidopteran-active B. thuringiensis microbe. The DNA encoding the B.t. toxin can be used to transform various prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes to express the B.t. toxin. These recombinant microbes can be used to control lepidopteran insects in various environments.

computer. Controlled operation of the radiation and its movement against the substrate or the movement of the substrate during processing is effected by operating an automatic computer or master controller. An automatic article manipulator is also controlled in its operation to move the substrate prior to and after operation thereon with such radiation. A single computer or master controller may be employed to control the operation of the manipulator for removing the substrate from the vicinity of the radiation and replacing it with a new article to be operated on during the next cycle of operation of the radiation generating means.

5039858 DIVALENT FLUORIDE DOPED CERIUM FLUORIDE SCINTILLATOR David F Anderson, Robert W Sparrow The use of divalent fluoride dopants in scintillator materials comprising cerium fluoride is disclosed. The preferred divalent fluoride dopants are calcium fluoride, strontium fluoride, and barium fluoride. The preferred amount of divalent fluoride dopant is less than about two percent by weight of the total scintillator. Cerium fluoride scintillator crystals grown with the addition of a divalent fluoride have exhibited better transmissions and higher light outputs than crystals grown without the addition of such dopants. These scintillators are useful in radiation detection and monitoring applications, and are particularly well suited for high-rate applications such as positron emission tomography (PET).

5039860 APPARATUS FOR MONITORING THE RADIOACTIVITY OF A PLURALITY OF LIQUID SCINTILLATION SAMPLES DEPOSITED ON MULTI-WELL SAMPLE PLATES
