50th Anniversary of the International Journal of Mechanical Sciences

Issue 12 marks the completion of the 50th volume of IJMS, which began in 1960. On behalf of the Editorial team (Associate Editor, Keith Davey, Journal Secretary, Christine Tyler and myself), and together with Professor W. Johnson, the Founding Editor-in-Chief, I would like to thank all those who have supported the journal over this time, especially the authors, the quality of whose work has established the reputation of the journal. This has been strongly underpinned by several thousand international referees who have worked tirelessly to preserve the standards of the journal through the essential element of peer review—our gratitude and thanks to them is immeasurable. As an aside, the probable move to a metric-driven process in the Research Exellence Framework (REF), replacing the longstanding Research Assessment Exercise (e.g. RAE2008) in the UK and its equivalents across the academic world, relies essentially upon the unsung commitment of these volunteers, on whose judgements the advancement of our subject ultimately depends. We would also like to thank Elsevier, currently in the hands of Dean Eastbury, Dan Lovegrove and Jo Souch, for their past and present support in producing the journal. This has seen several changes of format, culminating in the current electronic submission and refereeing system, which, from the editorial perspective, has been a significant and positive tool in handling the throughput of the journal and communicating with authors and referees.

It is a pleasure and privilege on this occasion to express my indebtedness to Bill Johnson, the founder of IJMS in January 1960, for his far-sightedness in instituting this journal in the days of Pergamon Press, transitioning to Elsevier in 1992. Bill foresaw the importance of organs for the dissemination of research in the Mechanical Sciences especially which has spawned a vast array of such journals which form the invaluable ‘literature’ for researchers in many fields. Bill had the invaluable secretarial support of his wife Heather as I had with my wife Susan who kept the Journal’s business on track with their typewriters, a far cry from the electronic systems that now pervade scientific/engineering publishing! Finally, for my part, in expressing my thanks to all those above who have contributed immensely to the past of IJMS, wish all those who will contribute in the future and use the IJMS continued success in their quest for understanding and satisfaction in their work. The next 50 years could be very interesting!
