5432083 ENZYMATIC METHOD FOR REMOVING OXYGEN FROM OILS AND FATS Copeland James C; Adler Howard Ashland, OH, UNITED STATES assigned to Oxyrase Inc The present invention is directed to a novel method and device for removing oxygen from oils. The oils may be in liquid form, such as vegetables oils, etc., in solid form, such as fats, etc. or in some type of intermediate semi-solid form. By removing oxygen from various products containing oils and fats, the present invention is an effective antioxidant for food products, as well as for various industrial and commercial products, such as paints, varnishes, etc. The method comprises the steps of providing an oil containing oxygen and adding to the oil a sufficient amount of an aqueous solution containing oxygen scavenging membrane fragments and a hydrogen donor substance to reduce the oxygen present in the oil to water.
5434250 PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING HIGH ALPHA-LACTALBUMIN CONTENT COMPOSITION Shimatani Masahar; Uchida Yukio; Matsuno Ichirou; Sugawara Makihiro; Nakano Taku Sayama, JAPAN assigned to Snow Brand Milk Products Co Ltd The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing a composition highly containing alpha-lactalbmin. This process comprises adjusting, to pH of 2-4 or 5 or higher, cheese whey, acid casein whey or rennet casein whey; contacting the whey with an ion exchanger, to produce an exchanger-passed solution; and then, concentrating and/or desalting the exchanger-passed solution, if necessary after the exchanger-passed solution is adjusted to a pH of 4 or lower. According to the present process, it is possible to efficiently produce a high alpha-lactalumin content composition at low cost and in a simple and easy manner on an industrial scale. The resultant high alpha-lactalumin content composition can be used for food materials and medical materials.

REMOVING LIPIDS FROM CHEESE WHEY USING CHITOSAN
Pollock Thomas; Armentrout Richard San Diego, CA, UNITED STATES assigned to Shin-Etsu Bio Inc; Shin-Etsu Chemical Co Ltd The present invention relates to the unexpected discovery that xanthan gum can be produced from filtered whey or milk products, including whey permeates and milk permeates, by a fermentation process which uses organisms which are capable of converting lactose to xanthan gum.
Damodaran Srinivasan Madison, Wl, UNITED STATES Process for removing lipids from a source material comprising: a) adding a sufficient amount of chitosan to the source material to form a chitosan-lipid complex in solution; b) adjusting the solution to a pH of about 4.0 to 5.0. c) mixing the solution for a sufficient time to form a precipitate of the chitosan-lipid complex; and d) separating the chitosan-lipid complex from the solution to form a substantially lipid-free protein retentate.
