PATENT ABSTRACTS
The invention relates to a method for detecting the presence of a DNA deletion polymorphism associated with susceptibility for cancer in a human using allele specific amplification primers. Disclosed herein are methods for analyzing human DNA using a hybridization probe which will identify a restriction fragment length polymorphism within the 13q33 right arrowqter locus, methods for selectively amplifying DNA within this locus, methods of identifying and producing or purifying the peptide encoded by the human poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase processed pseudogene, and methods of regulating the expression of said processed pseudogene.
5449606 DNA ENCODING NEURONAL NICOTINIC ACETYLCHOLINE RECEPTOR COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING THE BETA 4 SUBUNIT Heinemann Stephen; Duvoisin Robert M;Deneris Evan S; Patrick James La Jolla, CA, UNITED STATES assigned to The Salk Institute for Biological Studies The present invention discloses a new neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit, beta4. The new subunit can form functional combinations with other neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits, including, but not limited to, alpha2, alpha3, alpha4 and beta2. A cDNA clone containing the DNA sequences that encode the novel receptor subunit of the invention has been deposited with the American Type Culture Collection for patent purposes.
The invention provides a method of detecting the presence ofa parvovirus in a sample comprising contacting the sample with a purified receptor for a parvovirus, and detecting the presence of binding of parvovirus to the receptor, the presence of binding indicating the presence of parvovirus in the sample. The present invention also provides methods of purifying and removing parvoviruses from samples. The invention further provides a composition comprising a globoside, or the parvovirus B I9 binding domain of globoside, in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Also provided are methods of preventing or treating parvovirus B19 infection in a human subject by preventing the binding of parvovirus B19 to P antigen and methods of gene therapy utilizing parvovirus B19 and the parvovirus B19 cellular receptor.

to such proteins, DNA encoding the proteins and host cells expressing the proteins. A method for determining the susceptibility of a subject to obesity by measuring the levels of one or more adipogenic factors in a biological fluid or tissue extract is also disclosed, as is a method for evaluating an anti-obesity drug which comprises contacting the drug with cells capable of producing one or more adipogenic factors and measuring the amount of the factors produced.

DNA clones, e.g. PI3-B, comprising at least part ofa gene derived from peach that encodes ethylene-forming enzyme. Such clones may comprise DNA constructs including plant promoters capable of expressing RNA in plant cells. Such constructs may be used to inhibit production of ethylene-forming enzyme in transformed plants, and thereby to produce slower-ripening fruit, particularly peaches. The clones may be obtained by PCR using specific oligo-nucleotide primers.

DNA ENCODING AMINO ACIDS 590-710 OF GLYCOPROTEIN GII OF PSEUDORABIES VIRUS
Cysteine substitution mutants of alpha and/or beta globin mutants are produced by recombinant DNA techniques and used in the construction, intracellularly or otherwise, of mutant hemoglobins in which alpha- and beta-globin like subunits are crosslinked by disulfide bonds. Solutions of these mutant hemoglobins are used as blood substitutes. Preferably, these mutant hemoglobins contain further mutations which reduce their affinity for oxygen. Hemoglobins are preferably obtained by recombinant DNA techniques. Both alpha and beta globin chains can now be readily expressed, making possible the commercial production of wholly artificial hemoglobin, whether conventional or mutant in form. Solutions of wholly artificial hemoglobins are also used as blood substitutes. Expression of the alpha globin gene was substantially improved by means of a beta globin gene header.

The present invention is concemed with a pseudorabies virus (PRV) vaccine comprising a polypeptide of the PRV glycoprotein gll or a fragment thereof which was shown to be the site of interaction of PRV neutralizing antibodies. Vector vaccines capable to express a polynucleotide fragment coding for such a polypeptide also form part of the present invention.
