5458258 STORAGE TANKS FOR COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS WITH A HYDROXYPHENOXYETHER POLYMER BARRIER LINER White Jerry E; Sanders Edgar S; Brennan David J; Bakhru Prakash; Landes Susie K; Anand Jo Midland, MI, UNITED STATES Assigned to The Dow Chemical Company A storage tank for compressed natural gas (CNG) comprises a hydroxy-phenoxyether polymermethane barrier liner and a fiber composite outer shell. The hydroxy-phenoxyether polymer has a methane transmission rate of not more than about 50 cc-mil/lOO in2-day (19.5 cm3-rnm/m2-atm-day) at 25 degrees C. and 2000 psi (13,800 kPa) methane pressure.
A lightweight, flexible ski pole which is virtually indestructible comprises a filament-reinforced, polymeric matrix composite shaft having a diameter of less than 0.5 inches and a tensile strength on the order of 140,000 psi or higher. The shaft is of three-layer construction, having a center layer whose filaments are diagonally offset at a bias angle for lateral bending strength. The shaft may be hollow or solid, and may be formed by either a pultrusion or table-rolling method.

A baseball bat or the like comprises a tube formed with an outer layer of wood-like veneer covering a layer of fiber reinforced resin, with the tube layers being impregnated with and bonded to one another with a cured resin. The ends of the tube are closed off with caps adhered to the tube and preferably molded in olace. The tube nreferablv has a foam or aluminum core including a ce&al caviiy , said core having sufficient resiliency to allow the tube to resiliently deform during impact with a baseball. The product is formed by molding over a form which mav constitute the cavitied foam c&e or, alternatively, a firming mandrel which is removed after the resin is cured. The cavity may be filled with a material which is less dense than the core.

Aramids which after drawing have high tensile strengths and tensile moduli are made from units derived selected 2,2’-disubstituted-4,4’from diaminobiphenyls, p-phenylenediamine, oxydianiline and terephthalic acid. Also disclosed is a process for drawing such aramids at least 1.5 % ,which results in the drawn aramid having significant crystallinity and higher tensile strength. The aramids are useful for ropes and composites.
5460052 APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR MEASURING COMPOSITE INTERFACE PROPERTIES Erturk Turga; Chepolis William UNITED STATES Assigned to Massachusetts Lowell
Lowell, MA, University of
An apparatus and method for measuring interface properties of a composite test specimen includes a first jaw for gripping the specimen. The specimen has a fiber extending through a matrix forming a fiber-matrix interface with a portion of the fiber extending from the matrix. A second jaw grips the fiber extending from the matrix. A motor drive coupled to the first jaw rotates the fiber relative to the matrix. The torque transmitted through the fiber-matrix interface to the fiber is measured with a stationary torque transducer coupled to the second jaw with respect to the angular rotation of the fiber relative to the matrix. From the resulting torque-twist angle plot, composite interface properties such as interfacial fracture energy and frictional traction can be obtained.
