5465573 MULTI-STAGE HONEYCOMB HEATER Abe Fumio; Ito Tadato; Ogawa Masato Handa, JAPAN Assigned to NGK Insulators Ltd A multi-stage honeycomb heater includes: at least two honeycomb heaters electrically connected with each other and disposed along a stream of fluid; the two honeycomb heaters including furthest upstream honeycomb heater and a an adjacent honeycomb heater which is adjacent to and downstream of the furthest upstream honeycomb heater; each of the two honeycomb heaters having an electrically conductive honeycomb structure the honeycomb structure of the upstream honeycomb heater having slits for adjusting its electrical resistance and/or element for adjusting heat capacity of the honeycomb structure so that the ratio of applied power to heat capacity of the furthest upstream honeycomb heater is larger than the ratio of applied power to heat capacity of the adjacent honeycomb heater. Thus the upstream heater and the downstream heater can give similar temperature increases without a temperature distribution along a flow direction during the engine warm-up. A catalyst composition is coated on the partition walls of the honeycomb structure, and the light-off temperature of the catalyst composition of the upstream honeycomb heater is lower than that of the adjacent honeycomb heater.

5465690 METHOD OF PURIFYING GASES CONTAINING NITROGEN OXIDES AND AN APPARATUS FOR PURIFYING GASES IN A STEAM GENERATION BOILER Vie1 Lamare Charles; Hiltunen Matti; Lee Ya Karhula, FINLAND Assigned to A Ahlstrom Corporation A method of reducing the nitrogen

oxide level in

the flue gases issuing from combustion units by introduction of reducing agents into contact with gases containing nitrogen oxides in first and second reducing stages, is provided. The first reducing stage is a non-catalytic stage (e.g. at temperatures over 800 degrees C.), while the second stage is a catalytic stage (e.g. at temperatures of about 300 degrees-400 degrees C.). A steam generation boiler with improved nitrogen reduction facilities is also provided. The amount of nitrogen oxides in the hot gases is reduced in the combination of the first and second reducing stages while producing steam in a steam generation boiler system, thus resulting in gases essentially free from nitrogen oxides while eliminating the possibility of NH3 (or other reducing agent) slip in the exhausted flue gases. Heat transfers in a convection section as used to establish stabilized temperature conditions for catalytic reduction.
