The present invention is directed to a type of flotation machine that combines three separate operations in a single unit. The flotation machine is a hydraulic separator that is capable of reducing the pyrite and other mineral matter content of a coal. When the hydraulic separator is used with a flotation system, the pyrite and certain other minerals particles that may have been entrained by hydrodynamic forces associated with conventional flotation machines and/or by the attachment forces associated with the formation of microagglomerates are washed and separated from the coal.

5472675 POLYVINYL ALCOHOL AGGLOMERATION AGENTS FOR MINERAL BEARINGS ORES Polizzotti David M; Roe Donald C North Yardley, PA, UNITED STATES Assigned to Betz Laboratories Inc An agglomerating agent for use in the heap leaching of mineral bearing ores is disclosed. The agglomerating agent is a polyvinyl alcohol of moderate to high molecular weight which is partially or fully hydrolyzed. The polyvinyl alcohol agglomerating agent can be used alone or in combination with cement or lime in acidic or alkaline heap leaching operations.

5474592 METHOD OF REPROCESSING METALLURGICAL RESIDUES, WHICH CONTAIN ZINC AND LEAD Bresser Wolfgang; Hirsch Martin; Kaune Albert; Hatter Uwe Grossostheim, GERMANY Assigned to Metallgesellschaft Aktiengesellschaft Residual metallurgical materials which contain zinc and lead are reprocessed by a thermal treatment in a circulating fluidized bed. The required heat is generated in that solid carbon is combusted in the fluidized bed reactor of the circulating fluidized bed. A solid carbon content of 5 to 30% is maintained in the lower part of the fluidized bed. Oxygen-containing gases are supplied to the upper part of the fluidized bed reactor, and CO2 is formed only in such an amount that zinc metal will not be reoxidized. Substantially all solids are removed from the discharged suspension in a recycle cyclone and are recycled. The gas is cooled

to a temperature at which zinc metal is oxidized to ZnO. The dustlike compounds of zinc and lead are separated from the gas.

5480473 METHOD FOR INTENSIFYING THE REACTIONS IN METALLURGICAL REACTION VESSELS Hardie Gregory J; Mantey Paul-Gerhard; Schwarz Mark P East Freemantle, AUSTRALIA Assigned to Technological Resources Pty Limited The invention relates to a method for intensifying the reactions in metallurgical reaction vessels containing a molten bath to which the reacting agents are fed below and above the bath surface, the gases emerging from the metal bath being afterbumed in the space above the smelt by oxidizing gases injected into said gas space and the resulting heat being transferred to the molten bath, whereby fractions of the smelt in the form of drops, splashes and large particles of the smelt move on ballistic trajectories within the gas space of said metallurgical reaction vessel, being ejected from the smelt like a fountain through the amount of gas introduced via underbath tuyres.

5480474 PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR SMELTING REDUCTION OF ORES OR PRE-REDUCED METAL CARRIERS Ulrich Kalus H Heiligenhaus, GERMANY Assigned to Maunesmann Aktiengesellschaft A process and apparatus for smelting reduction of ores or pre-reduced metal carriers in the form of an emulsion composed of slag, liquid metal and floating coke particles which pass from a smelting reduction reactor to a separate settling tank through a connection conduit. At least one lance is provided for blowing a hard stream of oxygen into the settling tank while a second lance is provided for blowing a relatively soft stream of oxygen into the settling tank. The relatively softly blown stream of oxygen sufficiently increases the volume of gas in the settling tank beyond that resulting from the hard oxygen stream alone so as to drive back coke particles floating on the emulsion from the settling tank to the smelting reduction reactor through the connection conduit.
