ELECTROCHEMICAL
CELL
Redey Laszlo I; Myles Kevin M; Vissers Donald; Prakash Jai Downers Grove, IL, UNITED STATES assigned to The University of Chicago An electrochemical cell with a positive electrode having an electrochemically active layer of at least one transition metal chloride. A negative electrode of an alkali metal and a compatible electrolyte including an alkali metal salt molten at cell operating temperature is included in the cell. The electrolyte is present at least partially as a corrugated beta” alumina tube surrounding the negative electrode interior to the positive electrode. The ratio of the volume of liquid electrolyte to the volume of the positive electrode is in the range of from about 0.1 to about 3. A plurality of stacked electrochemical cells is disclosed each having a positive electrode, a negative electrode of an alkali metal molten at cell operating temperature, and a compatible electrolyte. The electrolyte is at least partially present as a corrugated beta” alumina sheet separating the negative electrode and interior to the positive electrodes. The alkali metal is retained in a porous electrically conductive ceramic, and seals for sealing the junctures of the electrolyte and the adjacent electrodes at the peripheries thereof.

CYLINDRICAL TYPE DRY BATTERY AND BATTERY CHAMBER Mizoguchi Shuri; Ishida Ken; Todo Kazu.0; Hazama Kiyoaki; Yoshida Koujiro Hino, JAPAN assigned to Konica Corporation A dry battery includes a cylindrical housing, a first end plate and an electrode. The electrode protrudes from the first end plate and includes a tip end plate and a cylindrical side wall. The cylindrical housing, the first end plate, the tipe end plate and the cylindrical side wall each made of a conductive material are electically connected with each other so as to form a first conductive surface. A first contactor of an electrical power source circuit is arranged to come in (contact with a part of the first conductive surface other than the tip end plate.

BATTERY
Tribioli Silvan; Giardinelli Vit; Rocco Francesco; Cerrano Franc0 Leghorn, ITALY assigned to Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei S p A; Microtecnica S p An electrolyte-activated battery, particularly for generating electric energy for the propulsion of underwater systems, and presenting a reservoir, an electrochemical cell, and a system for forming and circulating the electrolyte between the reservoir and the electrochemical cell; the electrolyte forming and circulating system presenting an inlet conduit communicating with the outside environment, a circulating pump, a device for regulating the temperature of the electrolyte at the inlet of the electrochemical cell, and a gas separator located at the outlet of the electrochemical cell and presenting a liquid phase outlet,
ADDITIVES FOR ALKALI:NE ELECTROCHEMICAL CELLS HAVING MANGANESE DIOXIDE CATHODES Davis Stuart M; Haines Christopher P; Lee:f Alexander; Moses Peter R Norfolk, MA, UNITED STATES assigned to Duracell Inc The invention relates to alkaline cells containing manganese dioxide cathode active material. A substance selected from the group of compounds CaW04, MgTi03, BaTi03, CaTiO3,ZnMn204, and Bil2Ti020 is added to the cathode of conventional alkaline cells typically having an anode comprising zinc and cathode comprising manganese dioxide and an alkaline electrolyte. The additive increases the service life of the cell.
