37 786. Method of determining the heat of adsorption of gases on metals. (USSR) In order to determine the heat of adsorption of gases on metals the Q factor of a hollow resonator made from the metal and filled with the gas in question is determined at some specified temperature. The resonator is then heated by lo-20°C and the Q is measured again. The gas is then pumped out, keeping the temperature constant, and the Q is determined once more. The resonator is then cooled to its original temperature and a further Q measurement is made. The heat of adsorption of the gas may then be calculated from a simple formula based on these several measurements. V S Batalov et al, USSR Patent No 326497, appl 17th Nov 1969, publd 10th March 787. Regular dislocation networks have been observed in vapour-grown selenium single crystals using the x-ray methods. The experimental system was evacuated to lo-” torr pressure to decrease the absorption of the x-rays. (Japan) K Naukkarinen et al, Phys Sfat Sol (a), 11 (l), May 1972, 327-334. 37 789. Analysis of high-purity iron. (Germany) The relation between the creep limit and the content of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in high-purity iron is studied experimentally. The iron samples were refined by electron-beam melting and heating in high vacuum. Activation analysis was used to determine carbon, nitrogen and oxygen content in iron. The effects of annealing under oxygen pressures of 50, 100 and 250 torr on the infrared absorption of polycrystalline samples of CuzO are reported. The effects of irradiation by alpha-particles from I to 3 MeV are also studied. (France) B Prevot et al, Phys Stat Sol (a), 10 (2), April 1972, 455463. 37
(USSR) Isothermal diagrams (at 25 and 700°C) of the system Zr-Y-H are presented and it is shown that mechanical mixtures of hydride phases Zr-H and Y-H existing in binary systems are formed in the investigated system. X-ray phase analysis is used for low temperature investigations and the method of measurement of hydrogen pressure by a thermocouple gauge is used for high temperature investigations. The vacuum experimental arrangement with a base pressure of 10m5 torr is described. V I Scherbak et al, Zh Nrorg K&n, 17 (4), April 1972, 1156-l 159

49 795. Method of producing pressure vessels. (USSR) An improved method of making pressure vessels with several successive shells is described. Instead of arranging the successive shells in contact with one another, gaps are left between them, and the gaps are filled with the working medium under pressure, the pressure difference between the working media in successive gaps being such as to be easily withstood by the intervening shell. The pressure withstood by the whole system thus becomes substantially greater. V M Ostrovskii and A M Brindzinskii, USSR Patent No 323175, appl 22nd July 1970, publd 15th Feb 1972.
