Austria, Federal Ministry of Health and Women, Dept. of Austrian Health Institute, Vienna, Austria INTRODUCTION & OBJECTIVES: To analyse demographics and outcome of radical prostatectomy (RPE) in Austria in a nation-wide series. MATERIAL & METHODS: All patients (n=33.580) who underwent RPE in public hospitals (covering 95% of all surgical procedures) in Austria between 1992 and 2009 were analysed. Patient demographics, perioperative mortality, interventions for anastomotic strictures and urinary incontinence and overall survival (OS) were determined. Data were provided by the Austrian Health Institute (ÖBIG). RESULTS: The annual number of RPEs increased from 396 in 1992 to 3.123 (+688%) in 2007 and gradually declined to 2.612 in 2009. The mean age at surgery declined slightly from 64.4+6.3yrs (1992) to 62.0+6.7yrs (2003) and remained at that level since then. An endourological intervention for anastomotic strictures and urinary incontinence was performed in 7.5% and 2.8%, respectively. The risk for both interventions increased with patient age and declined in patients operated within the past 8 years as compared to those operated before 2000. The 30 days mortality was 0.1% and increased three-fold from the youngest to the oldest age-group. The 10yrs OS declined from 93% in those aged 45-49yrs to 63% in those aged 70+yrs at the time of surgery. CONCLUSIONS: This nation-wide analysis of a country with a public and equal access health care system since decades describes some current trends for RPE. Since 2007 the absolute number of RPEs
