194 8504900 PROCESS FOR PREPARING L-CARNITINE
Charles J SIH, Charles J SIH assigned to WISCONSIN ALUMNI RESEARCH FOUNDATION Process for resolving DL-carnitine by contacting a racemic mixture of DL-carnitine with a microorganism which preferentially metabolizes D-carnitine and permits accumulation of Lcarnitine in the reaction medium and to a novel strain of such microorganism and a mutant of such strain.
8504901 MICROBIAL CO-CULTURE PRODUCTION OF PROPIONIC ACID Thomas D MAYS, Pamela N FORNILI assigned to IGI BIOTECHNOLOGY INC; The cultivation of proprietary and genetically altered strains of Lactobacillus casei) subspecies rhamnosus in the presence of Veilonella criceti) in a medium containing a fermentable carbohydrate results in the production of propionate, acetate, carbon dioxide and hydrogen. In the absence of either strain, carbohydrates are generally not fermented to propionate. Under optimum fermentation conditions lactate, the major product of carbohydrate metabolism of L. casei, is rapidly metabolized to propionate, acetate, carbon dioxide and hydrogen by V. criceti and is present in the culture medium at a concentration less than 0.5 milligrams per milliliter. The yield of propionate produced is approximately 1.4 moles propionate per mole of fermentable monosaccharide or 2.8 mole per moles of fermentable disaccharide utilized. In addition to the propionate fermentation, lactate can be accumulated by blocking its conversion to propionate by the adjustment of the pH, temperature or degree of aeration of the fermentation medium. Thus a mixture of propionate, acetate
and lactate can be efficiently produced from fermentable carbohydrales by the co-cultivation of these bacterial strains.
8505109 ANTIBIOTIC TAN-588, PROCESS FOR ITS PREPARATION, AND NOVEL SPECIES BELONGING TO THE GENIUS EMPEDOBACTER Hideo ONO, Yukimasa NOZAKI, Setsuo HARADA, 1 2 - 7 , Uzumoridai 4-chome, Higashinada-ku. Kobe-shi, Hyogo 658, Japan assigned to TAKEDA CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES LTD; Antibiotic TAN-588 produced by a bacterium belonging to the genus Empedobacter, and its salt have an antibacterial effect on gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and are used for treating bacteria-induced diseases of mammals, poultry, etc.
8505126 PROCESS FOR HECOGENIN PRODUCTION FROM ANAEROBIC FERMENTATION OF SISAL JUICE Chang II YANG, Av. Nossa Senhora Dos Navegantes, 205/902 - Tambau, BR-58.000 Joa(a@o Pessoa - Paraiba, Brazil assigned to UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DA PARAIBA Anaerobic fermentation caused by inoculation, in the purified sisal juice, of microorganisms of rumen mixed with a salt solution. The process demands a pH control, an anaerobic environment, a temperature around 37(o)C, a 50-70 r.p.m, agitation for one week period. The sapogenins (hecogenin, tigogenin) are purified by crystallization using a solvent made of ethyl acetate and cyclohexane (1:1), the process also produces useful secondary compounds as ethanol, acetic acid. cells, CO)2(, H)2(, and methane.
