8TH EUROPEAN SYMPOSIUM ON ANIMAL, PLANT AND MICROBIAL TOXINS, POREC, YUGOSLAVIA 227 September 1989 FROM 227 September 1989 on the St Nicholas Island near Porec was held the 8th European Symposium on Animal, Plant and Microbial Toxins organized by Prof. Dr Fxnxc GusEN~EIC (J . Stefan Institute, Ljubljana), Dr PLrrER MA~Ex (Biotechnical Faculty, Ljubljana) and Dr ZVONIMIR MAItlrrl~ (Medical Centre, Pula) under the auspices of the Union of Biochemical Societies of Yugoslavia. To our regret Dr MAlt~l~ passed away in April 1989. About 90 participants from the whole world took part in this Symposium . At the opening, Prof. G. Societies of Yugoslavia bid welcome to all participants . The opening "Alistair Reid Memorial Lecture" entitled "Chemical and Genetic Engineering of Snake Toxins" was given by Prof. Dr A. MExEZ (Gif-sur-Yvette, France). Besides, there were another 30 invited lectures which covered all major areas of toxinology . The poster section, in which about 50 posters were presented and discussed, dealt with two subjects : l . Chemical and Molecular Biological Studies of Toxins ; 2. Physiological, Pharmacological, Immunological and Clinical Studies of Toxins . The social programme began on Sunday evening with an informal get-together in the Fortuna Hotel. On Tuesday afternoon most of the participants joined the boat trip to the Lim Fjord and Rovinj as well as the farewell dinner on Wednesday which was the closing of this Symposium. During the business meeting the new President and Secretary of the European Section of the International Society on Toxinology were elected. The previous President Prof. G. HABERMEHL (Hannover, F.R .G .) was replaced by Prof. F. GusEx~Ex (Ljubljana, Yugoslavia) and Prof. F. ICORNALIK (Prague, C.S .S .R.), Secretary by Dr J. ME~t (Basel, Switzerland) .
