Since only the b a l a n c e m e c h a n i s m goes into the v a c u u m c h a m b e r , m o d i f i c a t i o n s were confined to m i n i m i s i n g o u t g a s s i n g f r o m the b a l a n c e c o m p o n e n t s a n d electrical i i n t e r c o n n e c t i o n s a n d leadt h r o u g h s to a t m o s p h e r e . A s a result, it b e c a m e possible to take the balance easily into t h e 10 11 torr r a n g e after initial b a k e o u t at 100°C. A l t h o u g h s o m e w h a t lower p r e s s u r e c o u l d be o b t a i n e d u s i n g t h e differential p u m p i n g t e c h n i q u e (in w h i c h t h e s p e c i m e n is s u s p e n d e d on a l o n g wire, so t h a t it a n d the b a l a n c e m e c h a n i s m c a n be in s e p a r a t e c h a m b e r s with only a high i m p e d a n c e a p e r t u r e for the wire), t h e n e w balance p e r m i t s of simple a n d even a u t o m a t e d weighing of, for instance, space-vehicle materials, w h i c h can be o p e r a t e d by relatively unskilled technicians.
