95/03670 Improving the quality of an optlmal power flow solutlon by Teguchl method Bounou, M. el al., Elect. Power & Energy Sysrems, 1995, 17, (2), 113-118. The Paper aims at improving the quality of an OPF (optimal power flow) solution including power demand uncertainty. The goal is to obtain a best setting of the in$t which results in a performance characteristic of the output close to target with minimum variability. Here, a post-optimality orocedure which incoruorates the ohilosoohv and the method of Taeuchi is applied. Power demand variabilit): is in&did in the analysis by &ans of the expected value of a loss function which is estimated by the Taguchi orthogonal arrays approach. The best and least sensitive solution over uncontrollable power system variability is selected by means of signal-tonoise ratios. Tlie paper-overviews the ‘aguchi approach and illustr%es the application of the method IO improve the ‘quality’ of an OPF involving the IEEE 14-bus network. I

Three-ohase induction motors are bv far, the most common mime mover in industiy today. Many of these mot&s, which may be as large as 25MW, are used in critical duties in industries such as oil, petrochemical, utilities, paper, mining and steel manufacture where sudden failure of a machine can have a drastic effect on production as well as safety implications. Prevention of failures is vital. The article describes the seven-year development of an online knowledge-based software program to detect rotor winding faults and mechanical load influences. H. Elect. Power & Energy Sysrems, 1995, 17, (2), 91-99. The paper is concerned with appli&tion of interconnected.Iearning automata to learning coordinated control (LCC) of power systems. The jnterconnetted learning automata with variable subsets of control actions are used to optimize parameters of distributed local controllers to improve power system stability based on an integrated performance index. Simulation studies have been carried out based on a detailed mathematical model of a four-machine power system. Results obtained from simulation studies are presented to show a potential of applications of the method to control of large-scale systems. 95103675 Lighting. In this paper, a new approach for short-term unit commitment is roposed. The unit commitment problem is formulated as a network pro g Iem and solved by a network programming technique. The proposed algorithm has been tested on a system of up to 61 units to be scheduled over 24 hours. Experimental results show that this algorithm can obtain a satisfactory solution in 46.51 seconds on a VAX 111750 computer.

Electric

Power Systems Res., Feb. 1995, 32, (2).

Restoration of a distribution system following extended outages may cause problems if the substation transformer capacity cannot supply the initial load. Excessive initial load is a result of loss of diversity in the distribution system. Dividing the system into sections and restoring these sections step by step is one of the solutions to overcome excessive load due to cold load pickup. In step-by-step restoration, the order of restoration of sections becomes an important factor in increasing the reliability and decreasing the average customer interruption duration. In this paper, step-by-step restoration of a distribution system to utilize transformer capacity to the maximum extent and to minimize the customer interruption duration is studied.

An algorithm to compute power oscillation flow of electric power systems has been developed and presented. For a mode(s) of concern in a power svstem. the relative maenitudes and ohase aneles of Dower oscillation flow o> transmission lines in’the oscillatibn roce& can Le calculated. Also the contribution of each machine and each Poad in the system to the oscillation flow can be determined. In large scale interconnected power systems and for interarea oscillation modes, where hundreds of machines may participate in the oscillation, power oscillation flow analysis of tie-lines may provide more clear pictures of the oscillation than those obtained by other available methods.

An integrated voltage regulator and power system stabilizer based on one step ahead prediction is presented. The fixed parameter predictive control scheme is shown capable of providing consistently good voltage response and contribution to system damping over a wide range of operating conditions and system configuration. This is in contrast to the case with conventional automatic voltage regulator and power system stabilizer where performance varies widely with the operating situation and can even cause system instability.

The paper presents the design, implementations and real-time assessment of a nucrocontroller based digital distance relay that can be used for the protection of power transmission lines. The proposed design is implemented using a general-purpose Intel 8097 microcontroller and custommade filters, operational amplifiers, sample-and-hold amplifiers, multiplexers, and analog-to-digital converters. The relay software is based on a computationally efficient symmetrical component based fault distance estimation algorithm. Results of the performance assessment studies on this algorithm have shown promising fault distance estimates for first-zone faults on the protected transmission line.
