Manufacture of carbonaceous granules Kotkamp, R. et al., (Assigned to) BASF A.-G, GER. Offen. DE.4,338,943,

May 1995.

Carbonaceous granules are produced from carbon sqspensions containing less than 20 wt.% coke-forming components and consisting of 30-50 fine carbon particles (e.g. carbon black, coke dust, coal dust, gra hite dust) and SO-70 wt.% liquid hydrocarbons (e.g. pitch, tar, residual od*Y. The suspension is charged into-a stirred reactor containing a fixed bed consisting of carbon particles of less than 1 mm diameter. The bed is mixed and heated at 400-600’. The coke-forming components and fine-Brained carbon are agglomerated to form granules which are withdrawn at the bottom and the liquid components not forming coke are removed by distillation. Cuttlng the cost of well clusWs Esau, I. Offshore Engineer, Sep. 1995, 67, 69, 71-72. A novel alternative to large multi-well templates and clustered satellite wells has found two Gulf of Mexico applications to date. The author explores the ‘unit&d’ subsea drilling and production system’s cost-cutting potential. Deepstar test samples synthetics 96/05706 Cottrill, A. Offshore Engineer, Sep. 1995, 47-48. A review of a long term test just starting in theUS Gulf of Mexico of the mooring and anchoring scene which is much pre-occupied with synthetic fibre ropes. On the more ‘traditional’ steel front the author looks at reliability work and hears the latest from chain, wire and anchor manufacturers. 96lO5709

Dlverless welding goes deeper

Offshore Engineer, Sep. 1995, p. 64.

Reports that by the end of this century, oil companies .will want to operate in water depths of l-2km, but the operational limit for satisfactory hyperbaric welding underwater is currently only 4OOm.To bridge this gap, MTD has allocated f0.5 million of EPSRC funds to build ‘HyperWeld 250’, a research hyperbaric chamber at Cranfield University that can simulate conditions equivalent to 2.5km water depth, where the ambient pressure is 250bar. This dictionary has been completely revised and expanded and is the successor to the Dictionary of Petroleum Technology published in 1979. There are nearly 70,000 entries, and contains twice as many terms as the first one with the added bonus that the definitions are both more numerous and more complete. Concrete TLP jolns the glantr 95lO5706 Cottrill, A. Ofihore Engineer, Aug. 1995, 24-26, 29. Describes the Conoco’s Heidrun platform which takes TLP technology into a new league. The author looks back over a turbulent design period and other challenges on this unique project, and follows with a-more detailed look at the all-important tether system.

Reports on thYelaunch ii July 1935 of ABB Vetco Gray’s ‘second generation’ HT horizontal production trees which are claimed to offer features and options not found on other horizontal trees and are also said to fully address current environmental and safety issues. Improvement of the quality of heavily weathered 95/05712 crude 011s Khan, Z. H. er al., Fuel, Sep. 1995, 74, (9), 1375-1381. Ways to improve the quality of highly weathered crude oils formed as a result of uncontrolled flow and seepage from damaged Kuwaiti oil wells were developed. Seven such oils collected from various lakes in different Kuwaiti oilfields had high contents of salts (up tfl5 wt%i and water (up to 50 vol.%), high kinematic viscosity (815 mm s at 50 C) and low API gravity (8.2’API). Washing with fresh water removed the salt and water by up to 29 and 12 vol.%, respectively. Further washing increased the oilwater emulsion owing to the flocculant precipitation of waxy materials and high-molecular-weight compounds. The application of demulsifier, fresh water and heat broke the emulsion and allowed the water to settle out. Kvaener’o floating trio eet for actlon 95105713 Knott, T.
