Radiation effects on Insulators for superconductQsloo464 ing fusion magnets Humer, K. et al., Cryogenics, Dec. 1995, 35, (12), 871-882. Fibre-reinforced elastics (FRPs1 are candidate materials for the insulation of superconducting maghet c&Is in future fusion reactors. The paper reports on a test programme performed to assess the mechanical properties of these materials and to obtain information on the damage and fracture mechanisms.

Electric Power Systems Res., Jul. 1995, 3&(l), 37-45. The paper presents a method for rapidly computing transmission capacity margin for security problems. The method uses an artifical neural network to model a delineating surface between the region of security and the region of insecurity in the space of most critical parameters. 96/00466

Haskew, T. A. and Byakod, R. Electric Power Systems Rex, Jul. 1995, 34, (l), 57-63. Describes a method for the real-time simulation of a twelve-pulse full converter. The method is based on a finite-difference simulation of the homogeneous state model of the converter with the inputs clamped over an integer multiple of solution time steps. The simulation code described was written in FORTRAN and executed on IBM RISC System/6000 machines.

Nayar, C. V. Applied Energy, 1995, 52, (2), 229-242. Electrical energy for remote areas has traditionally been obtained from diesel-engine driven alternators characterised by high running costs, low efficiency and high maintenance. Hybrid energy systems integrate renewable enerev technoloeies with diesel generators. batteries. and inverters to provide Highly reliaae 24-h grid qualzy AC ower lo remote communities. The paper describes the application of hybri ‘8energy systems to the electrificatlon of remote communities in Australia. Results from a few field installations using solar and wind power are also included.
Recent progress of applled superconductlvlty In Ya, L. G. and Lin, L. Z. Cryogenics, Dec. 1995, 35, (12), 843-851. China has been involved for many years in the development of superconducting magnets for high energy physics, fusion research, magnetohydrodynamic power generation, magnetic separator, magnetic resonance imaging and other applications. The research activity in superconducting magnets has been intensified and diversified at the Institute of Electrical Engineering Academia Sinica and other laboratories. This paper reviews the recent progress of applied superconductivity in China. A possible future programme in also outlined m this paper.

State-of-the-art flbre-reinforced-plastic cryostats in
Japan
Okada, T. and Nishijima, S. Cryogenics, 1995, 35, (ll), 801-804. Fibre-reinforced-plastic (FRP) cryostats have been developed for various cryogenic fields, kuch as‘supeicoriducting magnets and cryogenic electronics. The FRP cryostats ought to be used as liquid-helium containers for the operation of a.c. and/or pulse superconducting magnets because the eddy current losses induced in the metallic cryostats would be too large to op&ate the magnets stably. They are also needed for SQUID (superconductina quantum interference device) operation because the metailic-cryostats di< turb the weak magnetic signals that are to be detected by the SQUID system. The material problems and possible answers are summarized. The construction of FRP cryostats is demonstrated. Recently developed FRP cryostats for practical applications in Japan are reviewed. 96100494 A study of swltchlng overvoltage8 on composite feeders-line-cable feeders Hamza, A. S. Energy Convers. Mgmt., Dec. 1995, 36, (12), 1153-1165. The study is concerned with the overvoltages produced as a result of switchine ooerations on comuosite feeders. this is when a circuit-breaker closes iti c&acts at the pea’k values of the applied voltage. Line-cable feeders are considered in the study. The means by which such overvoltages can be reduced are also included. Also, the eff&ts of system parameters and factors on the initial voltage applied and accompanied overvoltages are covered.
96tOQ495 Supplylng power on prescrlptlon Warland, S. Bldg. Serv. CIBSE J., Sep. 1995, 17, (9), 49-50. The article describes how 20 MVA of electrical power is supplied to the f700 million Glaxo-Wellcome Medicines Research Centre in Stevenage, UK. The system has been designed to be resilient and reliable. By fan cooling, the two 11 kV transformers are each capable of carrying the full load demand, and duplication of the incoming cables and the ring mains ensures a fault-tolerant supply.

This is Pan 28 of a series, and examines the protection of induction motors against overload rather than short-circuits or earth faults. Quotes the safety requirements in section 430-31 in the USA National Electrical Code.
96100497 Voltage translents on restrlcted systems Byers, K. Simtars, Sep. 1995, 2, (4), 4-6. Typical sources of transient over voltages (TOV) in restricted systems due to various phenomena are discussed with TOV waveform examples recorded from tests conducted at a Bowen Basin coal mine (Australia). The mechanism by which TOVs are generated by switching of vacuum circuit breakers is described in detail.
