Compatltlva affects In the adsorption of CH,I on KC 96106660 impregnated actlvatad carbon8 In the presence of CO, Malik, A. A. et al., Carbon, 1996, 34, (4), 439-447. Nuclear installations use activated carbon in purpose-designed adsorption plants to control the release of radioactive iodine and iodine-containing compounds in the gaseous discharges. The control of gaseous radioactive discharges is a regulatory requirement, and the effective performance of the iodine trapping plant is assumed in plant safety cases. The paper describes an investigation of the adsorption of CH,I on a KI-impregnated carbon and the influence of competitive adsorption on the process. major progamme initiatives (Identifying Opportunities for Methane Recovery at U.S. Coal Mines [USEPA report containing key criteria needed to identify the most promising mines for &I-I reduction projects and profiles the most promising U.S. mines; an evaluadon of the best local-use alternatives to pipeline injection and how coal mines, local authorities, and local businesses may partner to secure project financing; and opportunities for electric utilities to participate in coal mine CH, recovery as a part of their voluntary greenhouse gas emissions goals) are presented. Computer-aided simulation of efficiency of an alecSe/O6562 troatatic precipitator Khare, M. and Sinha, M. Environment Int., 1996, 22, (4), 451-462. A computer simulation algorithm has been developed to simulate the efficiency of an electrostatic precipitator, operated in positive corona mode. The electric field at various predefiied grid points between the plates and electrodes, as well as the drift of charged fly ash particles have been obtained under steady-state conditions, using known input data. Continuous-flow biological studies of a synthetic eastern oil shale processing liquid waste Lowhorn, R. W. et pl:, Adv. Filtr. Sep. TechnoL, 1995, 9, 705-719. The pressurized fluldlzed-bed hydroretorting (PFH) of eastern US oil shales are an efficient process of removing hydrocarbons from this deficient oil shale. The process produces a liquid waste byproduct that contains numerous organica. Some of these organics have already been identified by the US EPA as potentially hazardous to human health and the environment. Radioact., 1996, 31, (l), 103-117. l”Cs activity concentractions in peat, wood chips, and ash products from 13 Swedish district heating plants were investigated during the winters of 1986-87. 1988-89. 1989-90. and 1990-91. It was found that there was a significant decrease in the C?’ activitv concentration in the fuel esoeciallv pronounad between the fist 2 seasons after the Chernobyl accideni. Despite the varying “‘Cs deposition over the country: it has been possible to find a relation between the activity concentration m the peat and wood chips, and deposition.

Depth migration of “‘Cs and ?Sr was studied in soils of reference sites that have different environmental characteristics and are situated in all four radiogeochemical regions of Belarus. Daslgn and development of a zero-emission 96/06590 scooter for Taiwan Liu, C. T. er al., J. of Power Sources, Mar.-Apr. 1996, 59, (l), 185-187. A prototype zero-emission scooter (ZES) has been developed to solve airpollution problems in the large cities of Taiwan. The design features of the ZES are described. 96106591 Design and operation of the coke-oven gas sulfur removal facility at Geneva steal Havili, M. U. et al., Iron Steel Eng., 1996, 73, (2), 25-28. Describes a coke-oven gas sulphur removal facility which utilizes a combination of two processes which have never been used together before (Sulfiban and Lo-Cat II). The processes have been effective in reducing sulphur dioxide emissions from coke-oven gas by 95%. Devaloplng low-coat airborne radlonucllde 96106592 monitorlna Perkins, D. Nuclear Engineering Inr., Sep. 1996, 41, (506), 34-35. Using its new technique for measuring low-activity gamma particulates based on sodium iodide rather than germanium detectors, Siemens Environmental Systems has developed an airborne radionuclide monitoring system which IS automated, cheaper and provides increased flexibility and convenience. Ed Nljpela: ‘Far more can be achieved than anvis96106596 aged by Minister Wijara’ Raaijen, W. Gas (Netherlands), Feb. 1996, 116, (2), 12-15. (In Flemish) The environmental movement should show society by practical examples that there is much room for energy saving and CO, reduction, says Ed Nijpels. Nijpels, former Minister of the Environment, whose present functions include presidency of the Dutch branch of the World Wildlife Fund and chairmanship of the Gaskeur Foundation, is a bit disappointed about the Energy Memorandum of Minister of Economic Affairs, Wijers. ‘I think the vision is alright, but it’s a pity he doesn’t turn it more into a policy. The envisaged result of the Enernv Memorandum is half of what could be attained. There’s nothing wrong with Wijer’s idea of giving renewable energy a more promiment position, But to my mind the objective of 10% renewable energy by the year 2020 is little ambitious’.

It is observed that PAH’s concentration in various coke oven tars differs depending on the process severity (heating walls oven temperature, under roof free space, etc.) and generally speaking, the battery technical state.
Depletion of foasll fuels and the Impacta of global :YX: Hoel, M. and Kverndokk, S. Resource & Energy Economics, Jun. 1996, 18, (2), 115-136. The oacer combines the theorv of ootimal extraction of exhaustible res&& with the theory of gree>house’externalities, to analyze problems of global warming when the supply side is considered. The optimal carbon tax will initially rise but eventually fall when the externality is positively related to the s&k of carbon in the atmosphere. It is shotin thit the t& will start falling before the stock of carbon in the atmosphere reaches its maximum. If there exists a non-polluting backstop technology, it will be optimal to extract and consume fossil fuels even when the price of fossil fuels is equal to the price of the backstop.
The affect of Fe catalyst on the release of NO dur96106596 ing the combustion of anisotropic and laotroplc carbons Zhu, 0. et al., Carbon, 1996, 34, (4), 523-532. The release of nitrogen oxides during the combustion of coal chars is a maior environmental oroblem. In this studv. the effect of iron catalvsts on the-release of NO during the combustion o1.a suite of carbons was i&estigated using a thermogravimetric analyser-mass spectrometer. The anisotropic carbons were prepared from acenaphthylene while the isotropic caibons were prepared from polyvinylidene-chloride and a phenolic resin. Nitrogen was incorporated in the carbon structure by treatment with ammonia. A range of catalyst impregnation and sample treatment procedures were used and the temperature programmed combustion characteristics of the resulting carbon samples were studied.
