ANNOUNCEMENT A CALL FOR PAPERS

S.I.L. W O R K S H O P

ON HYPERTROPHIC

ECOSYSTEMS,

VAXJO, SWEDEN

10-14 September, 1979 The Institute of Limnology, University of Lund, will host a limnological workshop on hypertrophic ecosystems in V~ixjiS, Sweden. The workshop will be held under the auspices of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae. The objectives of the workshop are to seek better understanding of highly eutrophic, disturbed and unstable ecosystems (lakes, reservoirs and ponds developing noxious algal and bacterial blooms, showing extreme fluctuations in their water quality on a daily and seasonal scale, producing gases, off-flavor and toxic substances, experiencing periodic anoxia and massive fish kills); i.e. systems requiring non-conventional corrective measures and new concepts for their solution beyond those generally accepted for 'normal' eutrophic systems. Topics 1. Definition, characterization and causes of hypertrophy (internal nutrient loading, role of sediments, morphometry parameters, water circulation, nutrient and light limitations, energy flow). 2. Stability of hypertrophic ecosystems and its disturbances (algal bloom collapses, anoxia, fish kills, production of gases and toxins, fluctuations in primary production and respiration rates). 3. Food chain properties of hypertrophic systems (food chain structures, secondary and tertiary production, utilization of hypertrophy to man's benefit). 4. Rehabilitation of hypertrophic ecosystems (lake restoration techniques, whole-lake treatments, algal control, bio-manipulation). Send title and abstract to: J. Barcia Program Chairman Freshwater Institute Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N6 Canada.
