T h is was a seven-day m eeting instead o f the usual four. P art o f the m eeting was concerned w ith n e gotiations w ith the Goodyear com pany re garding the use o f patented V u lc a n ite m aterial in den tures. D octor F itch , w h o h e ld a d o cto r o f m e d ic in e degree, m a in ta in e d th a t den tis try was a sp e cialty o f m e d icin e . In a paper d e live re d at the 1866 m eeting, he said th a t dental education sh o u ld consist o f a “ fu ll c u rric u lu m o f m e dical stu d y ” in a d d itio n to the dental courses. D o cto r F itc h was one o f the fo u n d ers o f the N ew Y o rk College o f D e n tistry. He was born in V e rm o n t in 1818 and died in 1888. Congress adopted the Fourteenth A m e n d m e n t c o n ta in in g “ due process” and “ equal p ro te c tio n ” clauses guaranteeing c iv il rig h ts o f Negroes. The K u K lu x K la n was form ed in Tennessee. In M a rch 1867, the U n ite d States p u r chased A laska fro m Russia fo r $7,200,000.
