DEVIATIONS OF THE PENDULU)[ IN M E x t c 0 . - - D u r i n g the stay of the French Commission at Fort Loreto, in Puebla, M. Bouquet de la Grye installedl in the chapel of the fort, a seismograph, composed of a pendulum and a m u l t i p l y i n g balance. After freeing the observations from abnormal movements,he found that tile sun repelled the p e n d u l u m in tl~e m o r n i n g and evening, but at midday, its influence was attractive. Tile vaults of the chapel, wh i ch ran from S. W. to N. E., being heated at m o r n i n g and evening, thrust the pendulum in a direction opposite to that of the sun, in the middle of the day, the influence was reversed. I n grouping the observations under lunar hours, the pendulum was found to be attracted by the moon. The seismograph showed that there were frequent abnormal m o v em en t s of the pendulum, there being twenty-two oscillations of the ground. The mean m o v em en t s were in the direction of N. W., S. E., w h i ch is the same as that of the chain of the volcano Popoeatapetl. W h i l e the oscillations were going on, the inhabitants of Puebla felt but a single earthquake shock. It would be interesting to extend these observatiohs, by registering the movements of a long pendulum for a considerable period in an observatory; they would furnish valuable data respecting the m o v e m e n t of the earth's crust and the tidal phenomena.--Cbmptes Rendus, J u l y 28, 1884. C. A FRUITFU]k (~RAIN.--.~ grain of wheat sown by the w i n d grew without cultivation in t~ae midst of a meadow at Chatillon-sur-Ghalaronne. On cutting the hay the tuft was left undisturbed and allowed to ripen. A t harvest t i m e it was found that the single grain h a d produced 53 stalks, 43 of which bore fine heads, yielding a total harvest of 1,563 grains.--Les Mondes, Sept. 18, 1884. C.
