Abstract : In the talk the contribution of A.I. Lurie into the development of mechanics in Russia is discussed . Copyright 10 2001 IFAC

It is necessary to underline, that the scientific interests of A.I. Lurie were extremely wide and concerned different fields of mechanics and control processes. The books and textbooks by A.I. Lurie, which were studied by hundred thousands of students, engineers and scientific workers, are excellent examples of scientific creativity.

linear differential equations with constant coefficients" (1937) and the monograph "Operational Calculus" (1938) . Later these results were considerably extended and generated a symbolical method by A.I. Lurie. Seventy years ago there was the necessity in the textbook on theoretical mechanics for technical high schools, which would combine the newest theoretical methods with practical aims. Such a course "Theoretical Mechanics" was written by L.G . Loicyansky and A.I. Lurie and published in 1932-1933. The first two volumes of this course contained the necessary tools for solution of technical problems, and third volume included more complicated methods of analytical mechanics with applications to a huge number of concrete problems. In 1961 their fundamental monograph "Analytical Mechanics" was published. In many respects "Analytical Mechanics" is the textbook of high level, where all the problems are carefully discussed in detail.

In 1927 the Leningrad Mechanical Society was founded , which has played an important role in the development of mechanics in USSR. A.I.Lurie was one of the organizers of this Society. Among many achievements of the Society there was organization and publishing of the well known scientific journal "Applied Mathematics and Mechanics" . A.I.Lurie was also the editor of translations into Russian of many remarkable books on mechanics. A.I. Lurie is recognized by the scientific community as distinguished scientist - encyclopedist . A.I. Lurie was member of National Committee of USSR on theoretical and applied mechanics, and in 1961 he was elected as corresponding member of Academy of Sciences of USSR. By expression of the academician V.V. Novozhilov, A.I. Lurie belongs to those eminent scientists, whose names themselves were indication of highest scientific rank .

Considerable number of the works by A.I. Lurie are devoted to the theory of thin shells. His first work "Investigations on the theory of elastic shells" was published in 1937. The last work "On static-geometrical analogy in the theory of shells" was published in 1961. On the theory of shells A.I. Lurie has published five principal papers and one monograph "Statics of Thin-Walled Elastic Shells." All six works by A.I. Lurie on the theory of shells have become classical. A.I . Lurie has devoted many of his works to 3D- problems of the theory of elasticity. Among them it is necessary to point out three monographs:

The first investigations by A.I. Lurie were concerned with hydrodynamics of viscous fluids . For the first time in studying problems of such kind , he used a new method based on operational calculus . These investigations were completed by publication of the paper "To the theory of systems of 29

1. Three Dimensional Problems of the Theory of Elasticity (1955);

the method of homogeneous solutions. The fundamental monograph "Theory of Elasticity" covers all basic problems of the static theory of elasticity including all variational principles. Although the monograph "Theory of Elasticity" contains a large part concerning non linear problems of the theory of elasticity, A.1. Lurie was not quite satisfied by it. That is why he started writing the new book practically immediately after publication of "The Theory of Elasticity." New book, entitled "Nonlinear Theory of Elasticity" was published in six months after his death. The more detailed discussion of the works of A.1. Lurie may be found in the paper. Even from this brief review we see that the contribution of A.1. Lurie to the development of mechanics in Russia was very important.

2. The Theory of Elasticity (1970) ; 3. The Nonlinear Theory of Elasticity (1980). All three monographs are devoted to the same branch of mechanics. Nevertheless, there is practically no overlapping in their contents. In the first monograph the exact solutions of static problems are considered. The main attention is focused on the problems for elastic layer. In this monograph A.1. Lurie has proposed a new method that has become widely known under the title of symbolical method of A.1. Lurie. The symbolical method of A.1. Lurie has received very broad dissemination in the theory of thick plates and has been used by many authors. The symbolical method of A.1. Lurie is especially effective in combination with

The name of A.1. Lurie has gone down into the history of mechanics in Russia for ever.
