A MEMORIAL Walter Jennings Haubach, Jr. The one sad event during this symposium was the illness of Walter Haubach, which prevented his attendance and eventually took his life on January 9,1982. Walt was an active member of the organizing committee and had a major role in the decision to hold the symposium, in the organization, and in the selection of papers. His untimely death ended a career which had an important impact on research in resource recovery, but the results of his career wil1 continue. He was bom April 20,1920, in Dayton, Ohio, and studied physical chemistry at Ohio State University where he received his B.S. in 1951, M.S. in 1952, and Ph.D. in 1963. He engaged in research at the Mound Laboratory from 1946 to 1963 and at the Monsanto Research Corporation from 1963 to 1971. In 1971 he became a program manager with the U.S. AEC/ERDA/DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences, Division of Chemical Sciences. Separation methods were the focus of his research, and his later work at DOE involved supervision of research in separation science throughout the country. Since new and improved separations are an important component of new resource recovery concepts, the effects of Walt’s research and the research he supervised are likely to be very significant. J.S.
