Traditionally, lexicography and terminology have been regarded as database problems. We hold the view that they are networking problems in the first place. If database programs have replaced card files, a continuous and cooperative production should replace individual research. Cost of access in terms of time, effort and money is the key criterion. Large numbers of authors and reviewers need to be able to work together to compile thousands of minute contributions which make up a dictionary or a lexicon. Users should become part of the production team because their feedback is precieus in any case - even if the term they were looking for is not in the dictionary. As a user typically looks for a smal1 piece of information at a time, he must be able to access the glossary at nearly no effort at ah. This paper describes a project which started out as an informal database to track terms, synonyms and related expressions for new financial instruments. The project now covers four languages (English, French, German and Italian). It has become a “living” hypertext application not only available on the Web, but also as a self-contained hypertext application for Windows and Macintosh, and as “paper-based hypertext” in the form of a booklet. At this stage, content is produced and maintained by a group composed of translators, terminologists, financial experts and software programmers. The World-Wide Web brings a global information universe into existente using available technology. In order to fully realize the benefits of this information system, methodologies need to be developed for the creation of scripts that query existing databases and produce effective user interfaces. Present practice falls short of this goal in two areas; first, interface changes require direct modification of the scripts, and second, user interfaces are hard, in the sense that they do not adapt to database usage. We present Zelig, a schema-based approach to HTML document generation that addresses both these problems. First, Zelig uses ZHTML schemata, which are HTML documents commented with directives for document generation. And second, Zelig contains an expert module which gives advice regarding the underlying data structures and interface design issues. This approach allows soft or euoluing database applications that keep track of usage and self-adopt to increase database efficiency and to improve human-computer interaction. As an example, we have used this approach to automatically generate four different WWWinterfaces to the CCSO phone nameserver database software. Ping A. Umstätter
