its (non-coherent) fibre light-guide will supplement the Fibrescope by providing cold light at the point of inspection. An optional extra light source, mains driven, can give bright QI light. The object lens of the Fibrescope has preset focussing, from 4 in. to infinity and the field of view varies with its distance from the work. The coherent (viewing) fibre bundle consists of hundreds of glass fibres, each only 0.002 in. dia. assembled into a + in. dia optical bundle. If improved image quality is needed, for example, in looking for hair-line cracks, more sophisticated Fibrescopes can be supplied. Edward Fletcheer Et Partners, White

applications in research and development and production, in the chemical, metallurgical and ceramics industries, for example, in gas-exchange duties, vacuum drying, vacuum distillation, impregnation, extruder degassing and annealing. Vacuum packaging has already been mentioned and there are a host of applications in handling sheet materials by suction cups; the centralized vacuum station for such uses could be powered by the Vacompac VP 65. electron-beam

welder

The new TORVAC electron-beam welder is intended for transducer, instrument and similar applications. Known as the Torvac CVE Type 31 -X, rated at 30 kV, 1 kW, it uses printed circuits for most of its internal wiring : it can be driven from a low power single phase supply and is free standing, houses in a single cabinet. sputtering

plant

The new 2600 modular system of cathode sputtering plant is claimed to be the only one that can be extended to suit the number of sputtering operations required for thin-film work, with each station having its own vacuum system with an incorporated Leybold-Heraeus turbomolecular pump. Processes that can be applied to substrates in this equipment are : dc or hf sputtering, sputtering with bias, high-capacity sputtering with Penning-type cathodes, etching, heating, glow discharge and cooling. The first vacuum station can heat, etch and glow-discharge clean the substrates or if these operations are not required, it can be used for the first sputtering operation. With a small installation the work returns to the loading station for cooling and removal, but with two or more of the vacuum modules added it can continue in the same direction to a vacuum lock, cooling and unloading station. Continuous-operation plants can be assembled with a loading station and one or more vacuum sputtering stations that accept and pass out the work via vacuum locks. Semi-automatic or fully automatic 2600 plant is available. External connections required are simply a 3-phase supply depending on the size of the installation. Each module measures only 705 mm wide by 1020 mm deep; vacuum pumps mounted at the rear add 300 mm to the depth required.
