T
his year has seen a great deal of change for our organization. In January the American College of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners merged to become the new American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the beginning of a new era for NPs. As we get ready to ring in a new year, let’s take a look at some of the 2013 highlights. First, we increased our membership by over 17%, from 38,000 to our current 47,829, allowing us to speak with one powerful voice on Hill visits. Second, our state reps have worked diligently with their NP colleagues to advocate for full practice authority. This year Nevada successfully reached that goal. With NPs having full practice authority in 17 states and DC, certainly this is a harbinger of what will be achieved. On the federal level, we have been successful in helping to delay implementation of legislation on durable medical equipment that would have required a face-to-face visit with a physician before an NP could order equipment for a patient. Additionally, we worked to ensure that the Medicare Bill would allow NPs to lead medical homes. These successes occurred because of our active participation in the policy arena. Other successes included overwhelming attendance at the Health Policy Conference in February and the national conference in June. We also launched a national media campaign to call attention to the many services provided by NPs. In summary, 2013 was a banner year that provided us with many opportunities and challenges that we were able to meet. If the successes of 2013 are any indication, 2014 promises an even brighter future for NPs. AANP will continue to work diligently on behalf of all NPs across the nation. May you and your family have a very happy, healthy, and prosperous 2014.
