Received 19 December 1969 and in final form 16 March 1970 A simple method for producing uniform W targets thicker than 15 mg/cma is described.
Graphite is used as “C targets. The crystal structure of graphite is plane as shown in fig. 1. To prepare thin graphite foils we must shave the graphite along the crystal plane. To find the crystal plane we cut the graphite about 1 mm away from the edge of the graphite block. From the cracking of thin graphite plate we could see the direction of the crystal plane. Once the direction was found, we saw a plate of l-5 mm thickness along the Fig. 2. Sketch of arrangement; 1: graphite plate; 2: spacer; 3: plastic plate. The shaded portions are fixed.

crystal plane. One side of the plate had to be smoothed by sandpaper. Then two spacers and the graphite plate were set on a plastic plate and fixed with a dry well adhesive agent as shown in fig. 2. Having been shaved with a razor to the spacer’s thickness, the graphite foil was cut with a razor along the dashed line in fig. 2 and then taken out carefully with tweezers.
