A special tribute to Dr. Bernard Lander, founding president of Touro College

Dr. Bernard Lander (June 17, 1915 - February 8, 2010). “One should live a long life, but a life of meaning, purpose and creativity. This is the purpose of life and the purpose of Touro.” This Special Issue, Functional Nutraceuticals, is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Bernard Lander, who founded Touro College in 1970 and was president until his passing in February 2010. Dr. Lander was a visionary leader with pioneering foresight who launched an institution that broke down barriers in higher education for thousands of students in the United States and around the world. Today, Touro is a large, not-for-profit independent institution of higher

and professional education, with more than 18,000 students studying at 31 locations in New York as well as in California, Florida, Nevada and campuses in Israel, Germany, Russia and France. In the area of health care, Dr. Lander’s enduring commitment to excellence for over 40 years has made Touro a leader in medical and allied health education, with a network of health and medical schools in New York, California and Nevada. Established in 1972 with a single Physician’s Assistant program - one of the first of its kind in New York - Touro now has 12 separate programs for medical and health sciences with over 1,000 students, making it one of the largest healthcare educational systems in the U.S. Professional degrees are offered in medicine, pharmacy, nursing, physician assistant, public health, occupational therapy and physical therapy, among others. A pioneer in Jewish and general higher education, Dr. Lander obtained his Ph.D. from Columbia University and served as a professor of sociology for over 20 years at City University of New York and at Yeshiva University, where he was dean of its Bernard Revel Graduate School. He served as a consultant to three U.S. presidents. It is a great honor to make this dedication to Dr. Bernard Lander, in recognition of his invaluable legacy that never will be forgotten, and that will have a positive impact on many generations to come.
